Today is Ash Wednesday. Did anyone give up anything for Lent?
On this Ash Wednesday, protesting will take many forms. All over the nation, college and high school students will show their growing support against the pending Iraq war by walking out of school at 1:00 today in a coordinated effort called, National Student Strike for Books Not Bombs. Our local high school and university are participating. Some others will walk out of work. Students in Australia have already staged their walk outs today.
This led to a discussion between my husband and I about walkouts in high school. My high school had them as soon as I began my freshman year. The first one I participated in was when they had finally closed down the old, dilapidated, all-black school and moved the students to our newer, better equipped high school. No one really knew what to make of it, but when there was talk of moving them back someplace else, that fueled the first walkout. The black and white students walked out and spoke with one voice that day. It was 9:00 am, the hallways were filling up and as far as I could tell, the whole damn school walked out. The administration was astonished. And we felt very powerful and full of hope that we were on a course to change the world of all it's injustice. We were heard that day. Looking back, I know now that that day was a turning point in my life.
For the twisted little kid in you. Yes, you.
MoveOn has an emergency appeal to the UN Security Council to back tough inspections, not war. You can sign that petition here until Thursday.
Blogging News
Bloggers with new Spring designs......Anne has a new design. So does Lynn, and Serenity! And dear Maggie says she is going to cut down on her blogging time. Everytime I see new templates popping up, I think I want to change mine, too. So I search and search and don't see anything that pops out at me. In two years of consistent blogging, I've only used two different templates for EBC.
Fear And Loathing In The Carribean
Johnny Depp is currently filming a new movie called, Pirates Of The Carribean, after the amusement park ride. The crew caught Depp in full on campy pirate gear, looking sort of like he just came from a parade on Christopher Street in Manhattan's West Village, and speaking in his "pirate accent." Pictures from the set can be seen here. Depp also can be seen occasionally at the Viper Room on Sunset in LA, which he owns. I recently viewed "Blow" for the 2nd time on digital cable. I may have seen everything he's done, come to think of it.
I heard the new Fleetwood Mac song, 'Peacekeeper' from 'Say You Will' last night. And I really like it. Great harmonies, as usual. Same great Fleetwood Mac sound, the 2003 version. Christine McVie has retired from the group.
Stick figure is from Maggie. She made this one for me almost a year ago and I changed her color.
