This weekend many people are honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, who was gunned down in Memphis, Tennessee, 40 years ago on April 4, 1968.

We know that he was a champion of non-violent protest for social change, and his writings and speeches still resonate for many activists. But I hope that people also know is that it was because of him that many of us found the courage to stand up and be counted.

I remember thinking as a teenager just how bold and brave he was to speak out in a white dominated society. I was thrilled. You were in such a minority to speak out against any injustice back then but he led by example and everybody was listening. He was so wise and passionate that we all felt called to follow him.

So it's not just that Martin Luther King, Jr, was a brilliant orator and facilitator-- he's all that and more, he is also who he is because he helped show us the way.

Do you realize he was assassinated at the age of 39? In my opinion, he went right into the heart of prejudiced Birmingham, Alabama, where

"...there had been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in the nation"

to try and talk with city officials about racism.

"...when you take a cross-county drive and find it necessary to sleep night after night in the uncomfortable corners of your automobile because no motel will accept you; when you are humiliated day in and day out by nagging signs reading "white" and "colored"; when your first name becomes "nigger," your middle name becomes "boy" (however old you are) and your last name becomes "John," and your wife and mother are never given the respected title "Mrs."; when you are harried by day and haunted by night by the fact that you are a Negro, living constantly at tiptoe stance, never quite knowing what to expect next, and are plagued with inner fears and outer resentments; when you no forever fighting a degenerating sense of "nobodiness" then you will understand why we find it difficult to wait. There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over, and men are no longer willing to be plunged into the abyss of despair. Edgar Ray Killen is on trial for orchestrating the 1964 abduction and murder of three voting rights volunteers, one of the most infamous episodes in the volatile civil rights struggle four decades ago.

What good is it doing now?

They did the same thing to Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers and Emmet Till's killers. They wait until these white men have lived full lives, get married, have kids, grandkids, etc, and when these killers have one foot in the grave to do something about it.

Why are they trying Killen now? Why didn't they prosecute Emmet Till's murderer when he was alive? Or when Emmett's poor mother was alive begging for justice?

Justice delayed isn't justice served. He and all the others should have been tried 41 years ago.

Ecology experts are predicting better than average fall color in the Great Smoky Mountains near Asheville, N.C. The area boasts one of the most diverse range of microclimates and tree species. Elevations range from 1,500 feet in the valleys to 6,684 feet at Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. There's also the famous 6,030-foot peak of "Cold Mountain," made famous in the book and movie. Experts are predicting a promising harvest of color, based on late summer weather patterns. {politics} The Democratic Presidential candidates Debate Tuesday night was interesting. Especially when Howard Dean was bitchslapped by Al Sharpeton right at the start. That was quite entertaining. I think he took offense to Dean sidestepping the question he was asked about his recent Confederate flag comment. Then Al got even more ramped up when Dean began his answer with: "Martin Luther King said it best when..." Sharpeton then volleyed: "I was with MLK back then; I didn't just read about him in books. It was a beautiful thing. I'm sure the Repubs were lovin' it. As long as the Dems will fight among themselves, they won't attack them. But I felt Dean's arrogance had to be addressed.

Why is it that FoxNews' Bill O'Reilly gets a pass but Trent Lott has to step down? At a Republican fund raiser, he is heard saying "I hope they're not in the parking lot stealing my hubcaps," referring to a group of inner city students who're are there to sing. After his "wetback" reference last month, methinks we need a muzzle for Bill.

I still wish for peace.....

I'm sitting here with two candles burning and the hum of the television's war reports are on in the background. I'm tired of watching the news, but I can't stop either. I've been numb for the past few days. I'm digesting and processing this vulgar war in Iraq and the war in the streets as police use violence against peaceful protesters. This processing and digesting is my calm before the storm. Soon cynicism will pay me a visit and I'll brace for the rage within.

After the initial bombing in Iraq when they thought they'd located Saddam and/or his sons, medical personnel were summoned to that location soon after the bombs stopped. Speculation is that the medical attention was either for Saddam or his sons. [via: washington post]

Good Morning...



MoveOn is suggesting we put lights in our windows to keep the light of reason and hope burning, to let others know that they are not alone, and to show the way home to the young men and women who are on their way to Iraq. If you will light a candle or even string some old Christmas lights, stop by and sign their list.



Protesting against the war this time around is so much different than the protesting I did in the late 60's, early 70's. Of course, it was a different time. But, I can now separate the man or woman from the mission. Before, I not only protested the Vietnam war, I protested against everyone who was fighting for it. Loudly. I hated all the participants. Now, I have a slightly different opinion of the soldiers, airmen, marines, etc. I don't know if they've changed, but I'm not fueled by hate for anything. Years ago, many protests were organized by radical groups; now, just a few. College protests and rock concerts were accompanied by the National Guard or cops in riot gear on a regular basis. Not only was the war an issue, but women's rights were being born; civil rights were in their infancy. There was a lot of hate, lots of drugs, lots of sex, lots of violence. A very painful time to grow up in.



A time of hope, then disillusionment, hope, disillusionment.

Hope when we all came together to protest the unfairness of Vietnam, when we all dug Jimi, Dylan, Zeppelin, the Stones; getting high and high hopes of an intellectual, spiritual revolution that could change the world.

Disillusionment, with Watergate, Nixon, Dead Kennedys, Watts.

Hope again; the strength we had at Woodstock, the march on the Washington Monument, and the newfound Equal Rights Amendment.

Disillusionment again; Four Dead in Ohio, and Martin Luther King shot, riots and fires in the streets. A very different time, indeed.

I remember how distraught the country was as we watched this great man lose his biggest fight of all to racial ignorance. I had thought some progress with racial harmony had been made until Dr King got shot, only to realize we hadn't even begun to fight against the ugly stain of racial injustice.
