It Gets Better

Saturday, September 25, 2010

So helpful for today's gay teens to know that it definitely gets better.

If you're gay or lesbian or bi or trans, and you've ever read about a kid like Billy Lucas and thought, "Fuck, I wish I could've told him that it gets better," this is your chance. We can't help Billy, but there are lots of other Billys out there—other despairing LGBT kids who are being bullied and harassed, kids who don't think they have a future—and we can help them.

Burroughs and Kerouac - an unpublished collaboration

The young generation: Burroughs and Kerouac - an unpublished collaboration

In 1944, two aspiring writers named William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac were implicated in a murder that scandalised New York. The episode inspired a collaboration, a debut that remained unpublished – until now. John Walsh gives the lowdown on the novel that set them on the road.

Fans of the Beat generation have known for years about The Novel That Kicked It All Off, but they've had to wait until the death of a journalist at United Press International for it to be published. The appearance in print of And the Hippos Were Boiled In Their Tanks by William S Burroughs and Jack Kerouac is a literary event, not only because it drew two of the three leading Beat writers into confederacy, but because the book told a story – of male friendship, gay obsession and murder – that came to fascinate a score of American authors.

Obama's Speech - Video & Text

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.

I confess that I cried most of the way through Barack Obama's presidential acceptance speech tonight. They will speak about this powerful, passionate speech for some time to come and the US will once again be proud of it's President.

Helms Death Inspires Solemn Reflection, Grave Dancing

Helms Death Inspires Solemn Reflection, Grave Dancing

"He was a hero to bigots and the cigarette corporations, a menace to the poor and downtrodden, and a mean little troll whose heart was so wrecked by wickedness that doctors had to patch it up with coronary valves from a pig."—Wonkette editor Ken Layne

"He spent his life doing all he could to make my gay brothers and sisters marginalized, hated and dead."—Andrew Sullivan, the Atlantic

"A truly great American and champion of freedom."—Heritage Foundation

So what do you finally say when a loud-mouthed bigot dies? When a venom spewing politician leaves his earth suit after decades of hate? You can quote the man who left us with the following gems:

“Watch me make her cry. I’m going to make her cry. I’m going to sing ‘Dixie’ until she cries.” - Said to US Sen. Orrin Hatch about Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun, an African-American.

“The government should spend less money on people with AIDS because they got sick as a result of deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct.”

“White people, wake up before it is too late. Do you want Negroes working beside you, your wife and your daughters, in your mills and factories? Frank Graham favors mingling of the races.” - Ad created by campaign strategist Helms and friends for the blatantly racist (and successful) U.S. Senate campaign of Willis Smith in 1950. During the same campaign, Helms described UNC as “the University of Negroes and Communists.”

”The Negro cannot count forever on the kind of restraint that’s thus far left him free to clog the streets, disrupt traffic, and interfere with other men’s rights.”

Fucking With The Constitution

As you may recall, the Republicans in Congress want to amend the US Constitution with anti-gay language that would supposedly "ban gay marriage."

Who is on the very short list of Senators introducing the "Marriage Protection Amendment" in the Senate? Why none other than foot-tapping Senator Larry Craig (R-ID), and whore-mongering Senator David Vitter (R-LA). You'll recall that the very-married Larry Craig was caught tapping his foot alongside a really hot male cop in an airport bathroom. And the very-married and very-family-values-proclaiming David Vitter, we now know, has repeatedly frequented female hookers.

So there you have it. Two of the Republicans' biggest marriage hypocrites - Larry Craig, who was accused of trying to have sex with a man (who was not his wife) in a bathroom, and David Vitter who has been repeatedly accused of frequenting hookers (who also were not his wife) - want to amend the Constitution to "protect" marriage.

Perhaps you all should call Larry Craig's and David Vitter's offices and ask them the following:

Senator Larry Craig
Phone: (202) 224-2752
Message: Can a married guy give handjobs and blowjobs to other guys in bathrooms and still defend heterosexual marriage?

Senator David Vitter
Phone: (202) 224-4623
Message: How many whores does a married guy have to sleep with before he's no longer defending marriage? And does the price of the whore matter?

Generation On Fire

There's no shortage of books, films, and accounts of the Sixties. Some of the protests and the pioneers are reasonably documented, but I believe there's still an important element of the early sixties and civil rights movement that's underreported so I'm thrilled when I see a book like this gaining the attention it deserves.

In his new book, Generation On Fire, Jeff Kisseloff highlights those voices of revolutionary civil rights activists by applying an extraordinary voice of his own.

Kisseloff profiles 15 people who had the courage to stand up to social injustice in the 1960s and continue to fight against racism, sexism, pollution, and other social ills. Among his subjects are Freedom Riders Bernard LaFayette and Gloria Richardson, peace activist Daniel Berrigan, Vietnam vet turned protester David Cline, gay rights activist Frank Kameny, and feminist Marilyn Salzman Webb. Kisseloff precedes each interview with a brief historical overview and includes photographs of the activists in the 1960s and currently. Interview subjects explore their personal development as activists and the convictions that have carried their activism into their middle and later ages.

Why Bathroom Sex Is Hot

Friday, August 31, 2007

Larry "I never have been gay, but I would suck a dick" Craig is the latest politician to get caught with his pants down. So what is the eternal allure of sex in a stall, and does it make you gay?
Sex in a stall doesn't make you gay. And if you choose to have sex with someone of the same sex, or are bisexual, it still doesn't mean you are gay. I think that being gay is a lifestyle and I don't know if Craig's living it or not. But I'm sure no expext.

The question of the day or week or month is why is it that all the "Family Values" bloviators get caught doing what they tell everyone else not to?

FREAK SHOW
by James St. James

Billy Bloom is gay, but it's mostly theoretical, as he hasn't had much experience. When he has to move to Florida, he can't believe his bad luck. His new school is a mix of Bible Belles, Aberzombies, and Football Heroes, none of which are exactly his type. Billy's efforts to fit in and stand out at the same time are both hilarious and heartrending. In this novel from adult author and media personality James St. James, readers are in for a wild ride as he tells Billy's fascinating story of bravado, pain, and unexpected love, inspired by his own experiences. - Penguin Publishing

The very fabulous James St. James rose to popularity in the late 80s/early 90s Manhattan club scene. One of the dynamic socialites who defined the underground scene and inspired the Club Kids movement, he also penned the book Party Monster, which told the story of the scene's premier event promoter Michael Alig who was convicted of murdering fellow scenester, Angel Melendez. A documentary was made about the events, followed by the feature film Party Monster which starred Seth Green as St. James and as Macauley Culkin as Alig.

DAFFY DOES DOOM
By Maureen Dowd

01/27/07 New York Times

Dick Durbin went to the floor of the Senate on Thursday night to denounce the vice president as "delusional."

It was shocking, and Senator Durbin should be ashamed of himself.

Delusional is far too mild a word to describe Dick Cheney. Delusional doesn't begin to capture the profound, transcendental one-flew-over daftness of the man.

Has anyone in the history of the United States ever been so singularly wrong and misguided about such phenomenally important events and continued to insist he's right in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary?

Jack Smith was a '60s underground legend. Before he was 30, this gay, Jewish, cross-dressing filmmaker had made one of the most influential films of all time, the 1963 avant-garde classic, "Flaming Creatures".

Though eventually banned in the state of New York for its array of bare breasts and flaccid penises, many bright lights of the New York underground hailed it as a masterpiece.

Purportedly made for just $300, Flaming Creatures features exotically dressed transvestites, a rape and enough bare-bones spectacle to make it the fringe cinema's answer to the exotic adventures like Arabian Nights (1942) that so enchanted Smith in his youth.

Avant-garde film enthusiast Andy Ditzler, who almost single-handedly has been keeping film culture alive in Atlanta, will man his blessedly creaky film projector to feature a 16mm print of Flaming Creatures in a one-night homage to some of the pioneers of American underground cinema, Carnivals of Ecstasy, at Eyedrum Gallery in Atlanta. The evening also features a new Ira Cohen work, "Brain Damage", as well as his new expanded "Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda".

The screening is part of Table of the Elements Festival No. 4: Bohrium, which presents five days of music (John Cale, Rhys Chatham, Captain Beefheart, ) and film that shuns the ivory tower for something that more closely resembles punk rock's outsider ethos and anti-establishment buck.

Sex (Circa 2006)

Is "oral" the new 2nd base? The "mostly" girls (as in mostly straight) keep on kissing girls. Do you have a friend "with privileges"? And the "bro job" has also arrived.

"So are you, like, gay now that Ernie sucked your wang?" "No! It was totally just a bro job. I loves the ladies."

No one is inhibited whatsoever. Everybody's "bi" or "mostly". My daughter is so free and uninhibited. We used to tell her to put some clothes ON. I never thought anything could compete with the sexual revolution of the sixties. What was once considered slutty-hoochie is now acceptable in dress and attitude and sexuality. I can't believe I'm saying it but pondering the evolution of today's sexual young adult is a mother's nightmare.

Strangers With Candy stars Amy Sedaris as Jerri Blank, a 47-year-old loser junky whore high school freshman with lesbian tendencies. Got that? As one might guess, the movie plays off the temptation, as well as the prohibition, implied in its name. It is a brand of comedy that invites one's sense of humor to venture where it has not dared go before.

Strangers with Candy shows the onscreen relationship between co-screenwriters/co-stars Paul Dinello (The Colbert Report, and the SWC TV series) and Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report, The Daily Show). The two play schoolteachers Geoff and Chuck, who are also squabbling gay lovers who offer a cynically comic spoof of gay relationships. [Read More...]

Principal bars Coral Springs student from singing anti-Bush song at talent show

A 10-year-old Coral Springs girl won't be allowed to sing a controversial President Bush-bashing ballad at her school talent show after her principal deemed it inappropriate and too political.

The song, Dear Mr. President, performed and co-written by the singer Pink, criticizes the president for the war in Iraq and other policies, including his stance on gay rights.

Link

This probably comes up much more often than we're made aware. In my high school, a band switched their song choice in a talent show and sang Country Joe & The Fish, "Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" to thunderous applause from the students and a swift closing of the curtain from the principal. They knew they'd never be able to get permission to sing it so they snuck it in.

Let the 10 year old sing whatever she wants. And if a mini neocon wants to sing something, so be it. Aren't we talking about free speech?

It's now time for New Rules, everybody.

New Rule:
Powerball Jackpot winners must stop saying they're not sure if they're going to quit their jobs. Of course you're going to quit your job. And I have news for you. Your co-workers want you to quit your job. Nobody wants to be on the pork-processing line next to the unbearable ass in the Gucci smock.

New Rule:
Ice dancing is not a sport. Take away the skates and the sequins and it's just a public wife-beating. If you saw this happening in a trailer park, you'd call the cops.

New Rule:
If you're too lazy to peel your own fruit, get scurvy and die! Hoping to appeal to teenagers who say they're too busy to peel oranges, Sunkist is introducing a new pre-cut, pre-peeled snack version. Not to be outdone, Baskin-Robbins has created a new cone-less ice cream that your mother pre-chews and spits down your throat.

New Rule:
Since our new national position on science is, "Screw it, we prefer witchcraft," let's not just retire the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Let's drive it to one of the five stupidest states and have the locals beat it with sticks. Putting it in a museum is too dangerous. Someone could steal it, fly it into space and notice we revolve around the sun. They almost booed that, I noticed.

New Rule:
Paula Abdul must go back on drugs. "American Idol" will always have a place in my heart. It's where I met Clay. And what could be more exciting than televised karaoke? But everyone knows the show is most entertaining when Paula is thick-tongued and sleepy-eyed and poised on the brink of yelling, "Who wants to do me?!"

And finally, New Rule:
When a woman over 60 has a baby, it's not a miracle from God. It's a miracle from genetic engineers, fertility experts and the good people at Merck. Here in California last week, a 62-year-old woman with 11 children, 20 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, gave birth again. To a 40-year-old man who walked out.

At an age when most women are content to putter around the garden or perform the opening number at the Grammys- -Janise Wulf, age 62, told the press at a news conference, "Age is a number. Every time you revolutionize something, there's going to be naysayers." To which the reporters replied, "We're over here!"

And, lady, let me tell you something. You're not a revolutionary. You're a vagina with no off switch. Twelve kids? Let me guess. You're either a Catholic or a hamster. Look, I don't want to be the one to say that this lady is too old and she's already had enough children. But, this lady is too old and she's already had enough children!

Hey, when you're 62 and you want children, you have two choices: a) in vitro fertilization, or b) luring them into a house made out of candy.

But, in vitro fertilization is not for 62-year-old grandmothers. It's for 35-year-old lesbians.

Does your city have a New Year's Eve celebration planned?

Tempe, AZ, has a large Fiesta Bowl Block Party celebration centered around the Fiesta Bowl football game.

Atlanta, GA, has the Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta, which I've enjoyed a few times.

To celebrate New Year's Eve in Key West, Florida, they have a "wench" drop at Schooner Wharf Bar, the Conch Shell Drop from a 110-foot sailboat mast at famous Sloppy Joe's Bar, and the Drag Queen Drop, where, at the stroke of midnight more or less, a drag queen named Sushi, sitting inside a giant ladies' shoe, is lowered from the roof of a gay bar at Bourbon St. Pub/New Orleans House. Now you're talking. All taking place on Duval Street. (See Live Cam)

seen on: CNN

Many cities have recently elected to go alcohol-free and offer a "First Night" or "2006 Bash" celebration. Especially with DUI (driving under the influence) being the focus of many police officers.

The New Yorker interviewed Stephen Colbert of The Daily Show recently, which is good since I don't see much information about him. I have watched him since the wild and weird Strangers With Candy on Comedy Central. I just read that he's the voice of Ace of the Ambiguously Gay Duo on SNL. He also talks about studying improv with Del Close in Chicago, who was also a noted pagan.

Colbert will star in “The Colbert Report,” in October, which will air just after the “The Daily Show.”
