Did Pink Floyd copy 'Lady Magnolia' for Darkside of the Moon?

Awhile back I heard a song by Piero Umiliani on the radio, which I kind of liked, so I looked up his music on youtube and one of the songs I came accross was Lady Magnolia. I couldn't help, but notice the striking similarity of the song to Any Colour You'd Like as well as in songs like Breathe off Dark Side of the Moon. The Lady Magnolia theme actually pretty much permeates the baseline of the entire album.

What do you think? Did Pink Floyd copy Lady Magnolia for Darkside of the Moon? Did they hear the song stoned one day and not being able to get it of their heads, did it come out during a jam session, all slowed down and spacy to make one of the greatest psychedelic albums ever?

On NYTimes.com below the article there is a list of similar movies that lists Brave New World, The Stand, THX 1138, Gattaca, and In the Country of the Last Things. Now THAT should be included on the banner.

The Rare Vinyl Network specializes in 'hard-to-find' vinyl. But I also reading enjoy the back story on the albums about the band members or what was happening at the time it was made.

In 1967 the Beatles were in Abbey Road Studios putting the finishing touches on their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. At one point Paul McCartney wandered down the corridor and heard what was then a new young band called Pink Floyd working on their hypnotic debut, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. He listened for a moment, then came rushing back. "Hey guys" he reputedly said, "There's a new band in there and they're gonna steal our thunder". With their mix of blues, music hall influences, Lewis Carroll references, and dissonant experimentation, Pink Floyd was one of the key bands of the 1960s psychedelic revolution, a pop culture movement that emerged with American and British rock, before sweeping through film, literature, and the visual arts. The music was largely inspired by hallucinogens, or so-called 'mind-expanding' drugs such as marijuana and LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), and attempted to recreate drug-induced states through the use of overdriven guitar, amplified feedback, and droning guitar motifs influenced by Eastern music.

This psychedelic consciousness was seeded, in the United States, by countercultural gurus such as Timothy Leary, a Harvard University professor who began researching LSD as a tool of self-discovery from 1960, and writer Ken Kesey who with his Merry Pranksters staged Acid Tests - multimedia 'happenings' set to the music of the Warlocks (later the Grateful Dead) and documented by novelist Tom Wolfe in the literary classic The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968) - and traversed the country during the mid-1960s on a kaleidoscope-colored school bus. Suzy Hopkins, formerly *Suzy Creamcheese, a dancer and inspirational figure on the underground scene in Los Angeles and London, remembers the visceral way psychedelic culture affected the senses. 'There's a difference between a drug and a psychedelic. Drugs make you drugged and psychedelics enhance your ability to see the truth or reality' she says. For her, LSD and music created a kind of alchemy. Many psychedelic bands explored this sense of abandonment in their music, moving away from standard rock rhythms and instrumentation.

Members of Pink Floyd put aside their long-standing personal differences to reunite for Live 8 and many say they stole the Live 8 show. (According to AOL & BBC polls) I agree. I enjoyed them most of all. They were absolutely mesmerizing with the haunting guitar licks, and Gilmour's mischievious grins while they led some of us down a familiar psychedelic path of days gone by.

Sales of their Echoes album have increased 1343% since Live 8 and those profits will be donated to charity. Desktop wallpaper of this Pink Floyd picture can be found here.

Animal Collective's forthcoming Prospect Hummer EP (also on Fat Cat, and already cruising file-sharing networks more than a month before its official May 16 release) refines and looks back at their many sounds. It’s a good entry point into their catalogue. And there’s a very special guest: Vashti Bunyan, the late-’60s British songstress whose recently rediscovered work has become a touchstone for folk artists who’ve arrived in the last two years. Bunyan disappeared onto the moors after her 1970 utopian-Britfolk debut, Just a Diamond Day, tanked on arrival. In 2003, she reappeared for "just this one time" collaborations with Piano Magic and Devendra Banhart. Animal Collective collaborating with Bunyan has been compared to Radiohead collaborating with Pink Floyd, but I'll reserve judgement until I've heard more.

The Donnas were added to the lineup of 2003's Lollapalooza. The band joins Jane's Addiction, Incubus, Queens Of The Stone Age, Audioslave, Jurassic 5, and others. Jane's Addiction frontman and Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell said in a statement: "I bought a pair of silk pajamas for the road because we're going to have a Lollapajama party with the Donnas." A three-CD collection of Led Zeppelin concert recordings titled How the West Was Won is tentatively scheduled for a May 27 release. A companion two-DVD set also is expected around that date. My archives and my permalink's sure are giving me a hard time. Truthfully, it's because I'm a dumbass and don't know what I'm doing. This looks like a job for Bailey's on the rocks. Then I'll revisit that coding hell. I remember a simpler time when Blogger did all the work for me. Now, I had to go and get my own website and it's turning into a DIY nightmare. But it's worth it. It's so worth it when you finally make it work. If that ever happens, I'll let you know.



I was proud that students of Asheville High and TC Roberson High {here in NC} walked out yesterday in protest of possible war with Iraq. They're getting a first hand look at what collective voices going against the administration will do. They're also getting various suspensions for it, though. The students interviewed said it was worth it.
