NOT an Earth Day Celebration Video

Thursday, April 22, 2010

I have mixed feelings about "Earth Day". When I 100% lived the hippie life, every day was Earth Day. I remember when the government declared an annual "Earth Day" and I thought it was ridiculous. That was like the fox showing us how to keep the henhouse tidy.

So now you see a big television network (NBC) owned by General Electric Corporation hawking "green" cleaning supplies and other plastic crap... arrghh... I knew I shouldn't get started but yeah, I liked this video so here it is and be true to who you are are the takeaways. If you're an uber, wasteful consumer, don't be all earthy green for just one day a year. For goddess sakes, be yourself even if it is a greedy consumer and if you do live it as best as you can 365 days a year, my beret's off to you.

UPDATE: Even though we don't live our lives like it is Earth Day every day, I can't fault the original Earth Day because it did spawn many good things. After some research I learned about the fruits of Denis Hayes labor of love.

Denis Hayes was chief organizer of that landmark demonstration Earth Day in 1970 and current Chair of Earth Day 2010.

At 25 years old, he organized the passions of millions of Americans into a viable political force that brought about real change. Within a few years of Earth Day 1970, America saw the passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, and much, much more.

Close Call

Greenpeace's Esperanza sent out this inflatable boat and blocked the whaling ships which led to delaying of their fueling. Although they can't stop the killing of the whales yet, they sure won't be making it easy for them to continue their slaughters.

At least no whales have been killed in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary since the Esperanza came across the whaling fleet on January 12th - that's 11 days, counting this evening.

You can also follow the Great Whale Trail - migration of humpback whales from the warm tropical waters of the South Pacific, where they breed, to the icy Southern Ocean around Antarctica, where they feed.

The whales are heading to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, which should be a safe haven for them. Unfortunately, whaling still continues there.

UPDATED: Sea Shepherd Critical of Greenpeace Failure to Stop Re-fueling
"Greenpeace had the opportunity to prevent the refueling. They were there and they allowed the refueling to proceed," said Captain Paul Watson. "That is unforgivable."

Death of the King of the Rainbow Warriors
Perhaps more than anyone else, Bob Hunter invented Greenpeace. His death on March 2nd 2005, of cancer, marks the passing of a true original, one of the heroes of the environmental movement.

In 1971, the word "Greenpeace" hadn't yet been coined. Bob was a hippy journalist in Vancouver, a town which he described as having "the biggest concentration of tree-huggers, radicalized students, garbage-dump stoppers, shit-disturbing unionists, freeway fighters, pot smokers and growers, aging Trotskyites, condo killers, farmland savers, fish preservationists, animal rights activists, back-to-the-landers, vegetarians, nudists, Buddhists, and anti-spraying, anti-pollution marchers and picketers in the country, per capita, in the world."

Among Hunter's stock stories was the tale of how he'd stumbled on to the Cree Indian myth of the "Warriors of the Rainbow" -- a legendary tribe of spirits who would rescue nature when the Earth became sick. The story involved a gypsy dulcimer maker, an old set of fenceposts, and the gift of a book which Hunter claimed leapt into his hands -- quite literally -- when The Greenpeace dropped down a steep swell on its way to Amchitka. The story itself was magical and mythological, and over the years Hunter would embellish and polish it into a hilarious and inspirational piece of campfire folklore.

{Hating On The US - #659}
Greenpeace activists, supporters, and volunteers around the world celebrate the coming into force of the Kyoto Protocol yesterday. This landmark UN treaty on global warming, took effect after an agonising gestation, supported by 141 nations but boycotted by the world's biggest polluter, the United States. The US pulled out in 2001 when President Bush said that Kyoto was too costly. An historic first step, to be sure, and it only requires a 5.2% reduction in emissions by 2008-2012. Obviously, the US is pandering to their polluters instead of their people. see demonstations...; 10 Arrested After Protestors Storm IPE Trading Floor.

Administration's Most Wanted. Tell Bush and Ashcroft to Prosecute Illegal Loggers, Not Greenpeace. For the first time ever, the US government has decided to prosecute an entire organization (Greenpeace) for exercising its right to free speech through non-violent protest. The trial begins on May 17th, and results from a protest against an illegal shipment of mahogany headed for the Port of Miami in Florida two years ago. [link] and Sign Petition

The Rainbow Warrior, Greenpeace's flagship, just thwarted a major illegal logging attempt as they fight against the timber mafia. Incidentally, Greenpeace has a weblog where they chronicle their daily lives and missions. They do more for the planet by breakfast, than I've done in a lifetime.

* Happy Fat Tuesday! Does anyone celebrate it? I sent Skye off to school with chips, dip and drinks for their high school party. They've been making masks for several days now in anticipation of today's party. It's also Grey Tuesday. I give you links to peruse until I can form a cohesive thought.

For those of you who offer up prayers, remember blogging friend, Rhonda. Her Mother passed away yesterday.

I believe if all my blogging buds that stop by could all meet up somehow together, it would be the single most, cool as shit, funky bunch of people assembled that you ever did see. No, really. The personalities, the talent, the humor, the intellect, the sweet spirits, the kindness, the life experiences, of the folks I blog with are flat-out awesome as hell. I must still be feeling the blog love...
