New John John Jesse Interview!

John John Jesse is one of the first artists I fell madly in love with via the internet several years ago. From the rough NYC punk scene of the 70s and 80s, John is now living and working just outside Philly and he was recently interviewed at his home.

I hadn't seen anything new from him in a long time and have never seen such an in-depth interview about JJJ so this is a super "get" by J.L. Schnabel. Go see the rest of the photos.

NEW Mark Ryden

This set of 17 postcards showcases all eight paintings, two detail painting views and seven drawings from Mark Ryden's 2009 solo exhibition at the Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. The postcards are printed on high quality card stock and are packaged into a heavy card stock folder. This is the first time that this collection of images has been reproduced in any format.

Illustrations of Rima Staines

Stunning. Breathtaking. Sweet. Charming. I feel like I've stumbled upon a secret mystical treasure.

The illustrations of Rima Staines from The Hermitage are astounding.

Looking through her drawings you are impressed by the beautiful details of her exquisite work and awed that she lets you in to experience it.

I've included a photo of her at the top and one of a cd cover she did for the (a new-to-me) band Telling The Bees; of whom she says is: a band of four lovely Oxford based musicians who might describe their music as ...darkly crafted folk, classical, cinematic, prog, acoustic-chill, psychedelia! At the bottom is a photo of the magickal truck she lives in now.

She leads an interesting life. Rima currently lives in a "...beautifully converted, magic truck, all filled with puppets and clocks and feathers and stones and things. It's like sitting in a fairy tale." per Telling The Bees website.
Thank you, Rima Staines, for giving us this beauty to enjoy.

The Lowbrow Tarot Project will showcase 23 amazing artists who will use their creative genius and unique style to take on the 22 Major Arcana [+ the card back] and create 23 new works of art in the rugged glow of the lowbrow art movement to be displayed in an exhibition and table top book and full color card deck in 2010 at Billy Shire Fine Arts.

"There are 22 cards in the Major Arcana, each showing some aspect of the human experience. The cards of the Major Arcana are focused on three themes: the realm of the material world, the realm of the intuitive mind, and the realm of change."

These particular 23 artists that were chosen is a very well rounded lot. Also it couldn't have been easy to narrow it down to just the 23. Bravo.

Down a Rabbit Hole to Meth and Its Dysfunction

The Black Acid Co-Op is a labyrinthine series of rooms constructed inside Deitch Projects's warehouse space on Wooster. From the moment you enter, you are completely absorbed by the surreal, completely enveloping atmosphere the immaculately constructed space creates.

"The highlight (and by far creepiest part) of the installation are the two, true-to-life home Meth labs constructed in trailers set seamlessly into the space. When I entered the first Meth lab, I was immediately struck by a visceral reaction to the clutter, mess, and general disarray of the space. It was entirely believable. Every detail from the carpeting on the floor to the box of Sudafed on the kitchen counter is believable, and horrifying."

The exhibit is over this weekend but I thought it was worth noting.

The gallery will have an artist reception for Femke Hiemstra's "The Herring's Hairdo" at the same time as the Hi-Fructose "Overdose" show Saturday April 4, 8:00-11:30 pm. Vali Myers

Vali Myers


Vali was certainly Melbourne's most recognizable bohemian artist in recent years. Clad in flamboyant gypsy style, with flaming red hair, featuring intricate tattoos (even around her lips), looking remarkably young for her 70-odd years and usually with a young male lover in tow, she was immediately recognizable in the streets and haunts of Melbourne. Patti and Vali - 1973 is a short film/documentary by Sandra Dailey. The film shows Patti Smith having her knee cap tattooed by Vali, and also features an off screen commentary by Smith. And Vali, The Witch Of Positano.

The Outré Gallery are proud representatives of rare prints by the legendary Vali Myers. (born: August 2, 1930 – died: February 12, 2003)
