Happy Friday!

Party Monster brought to life the ice-cold murder story surrounding infamous Disco 2000 club kid Michael Alig and his victim Angel Melendez. The Macaulay Culkin /Seth Green starrer is based on the book Party Monster written by club-kid-turned-author James St. James, and it certainly became a monster of a hit. Word spread like wildfire across the festival when it was discovered that outrageously high-priced tickets to the screening were selling on eBay, prompting anxious ticket holders to stand in line hours before the show. [based on the real "Limelight" club in [Chelsea] New York my sister and I are so aware of. The Limelight, I believe it's still closed down, used to be a very old Episcopal Church; London has a Limelight in a former church now.]

Good Morning

Is it too early to talk about men's asses? I want to say what a thing of beauty a good looking man's ass is. I saw one that was perfection this morning. And can't stop thinking about it. Is that sexist of me? I sure don't mean to offend, but damn. That was one fine looking ass in some tight-ass pants. My husband's ass is also very fine. Note to self: buy hubby some tight-ass pants.

I'll give you a topic. Owen Wilson. Talk amongst yourselves. And while you're talking about him, I"ll eavesdrop to see if anyone thinks he's as good looking as I do; in a quirky kind of way. I can't put my finger on it {behave, Susan}, but there's something about him. I wonder if he likes older women. It never hurts to ask. [unless you're talking to a dominatrix] He's in that movie, Shanghai Knights, now with Jackie Chan. Even though I think he's nice looking, there are probably 20 or so guys I think look better than him. He's been on my mind because I've seen a lot of him lately on tv. Top of my wet just dreaming list? Mick Jagger would always be Number One, and Dave Navarro is very fine.....

The Iraqi Inspectors had their deadline on, Jan 27, Monday. There wasn't a lot of talk about it. Or their voices were barely audible over the White House's drums of war. Were the inspections just some mutual circle jerk set up by the White House [Cheney, Bush, Rumsfield] axis of evil?

Shirl was talking about old tv shows, [Sky King, Captain Kangaroo, Roy & Dale, The Lone Ranger, Mickey Mouse Club, Lassie, Howdy Doody], the other day.

'Captain Kangaroo' [1955-1985]

The Captain's theme song really brings the memories rushing back. I remember this show with great fondness. If kids had to watch it today, they'd swear they'd died and had a front row seat in hell. This large, old man with weird hair and bushy sideburns, and an overgrown coat isn't exactly styling. 'Mr Green Jeans' told corny ass jokes, and 'Bunny Rabbit' always running a riff on the Captain to get his carrots. There was Dancing Bear, and Mr Moose. And 'Grandfather Clock'? I think I miss you most of all.

Do you think the closer we get to war, the more I regress into nostalgia land? Maggie and Alex saw the Captain, so that answered my mental question about viewing it in Canada. My son enjoyed watched Sesame Street and the Electric Company---remember that show? I don't think he was ever into Mr Rogers.

Pentagon Eyes Mass Graves

The bodies of U.S. soldiers killed by chemical or biological weapons in Iraq or future wars may be bulldozed into mass graves and burned to save the lives of surviving troops, under an option being considered by the Pentagon. An eye opener to go with your Bloody Mary/Cappuccino this morning. {via: disinfo.com}

The international news is usually so damn bleak, that I'm thrilled when I find a shining light in a dismal, dark sea of despair. The Afghan women take their driving test this weekend. They have not been able to drive since 1992, when Islamic groups seized the capital, Kabul, and began to restrict women's public roles. Bastards. Can you imagine how fantastic it must feel to get some of your freedom/independence back in this way?

Good Morning! Super Bowl Sunday involves lots of advance preparation. The officials have devised a plan, known as "Operation Game Day," and it's part of a $9 million post-Sept. 11 anti-terrorism effort that includes beefed up security at the California-Mexico border, a no-fly zone over the stadium, military air patrols and an elaborate camera system monitoring every inch of the stadium and environs. Also Arab-American groups estimated at least 36 people have been detained as part of this plan. It's sure an eye opener to realize what preparation's involved for the Super Bowl. Although detaining stadium workers seems to be carrying things a little too far. And I really hadn't thought about it before, but Jen at J-Mo mentioned that the game is an East/West thing. In that case, I'd have to pull for Tampa Bay. Their qb went to Owens' High School in Black Mountain, NC; the same county as I'm in.

Say, how are those New Year's Resolutions working out for you? I'm right on course; since I didn't make any.

We have a blanket of snow this morning. Only 1-2 inches, it appears. I saw where Bobbi has 6-8 inches of new snow this morning; she's in the next county over from me. I really need to venture out today; maybe later. When thinking about being stranded because of snow, I always think back to this one time years ago when my sister, Robin, and I were snowed in, but just before it got too bad, we went out for supplies. Of course, this included a stop at the ABC Store [Liquor Store], and a stop for groceries. On the way back, we slid off the road into a ditch and couldn't get out. No one came by to help either. So what were we going to do? Open up that Vodka; find the orange juice and make Screwdrivers. After a few drinks, someone finally stopped to ask if we needed help. I remember laughing so hard that he finally left. Which made us laugh that much harder. . . . That was at least one lifetime ago.

Is it me, or does it seem to you that an enormous amount of people seem to be depressed this time of year? Fortunately, I don't get very down anymore. But years back, I remember calling my blues The Februarys, since they always showed up this time of the year.

I decided to "spotlight" a couple of my favorite blog reads today. Do you ever see a weblog you wish you'd written? That's how I feel about Anne's, Am I There Yet? Anne's writing grabs you with her unrelenting wit and style from the get. She can't help it. Talent oozes from her. Another favorite is Ailina's, Paper Bent. With five kids, she is just 28, and very much in love with her husband. And she writes beautifully from the heart. Another thing I enjoy about both sites, is the personality they exude.

I like my favorites to have soul. The same way I like friends. My hb and I established this phrase long ago to determine whether or not we liked someone. This would describe in a few words what we needed to convey and has since become a staple in our cupboard of conversation. As in, "he has a lotta soul," or "he has no soul". Usually those with it, can easily empathize, have survived something insurmountable, been knocked down and they've picked themself up. Could sing the blues, for real. The more soul you have, the more I understand you. If you're souless, I'll never get you.

I never got the chance to hear Ellen McIlwaine perform. She plays blues and slide guitar, and sings. Sometimes solo, sometimes not. Hb [husband] was in a band with her in the 60's, in New York where they lived together and they played in Greenwich Village along with many other famous folks just starting out. She knows everyone and travels all over the world now. She's leaving in the morning for New Zealand and Australia to play some more dates. Not a bad way to make a living, I'd say.

Many have seen the movie, Training Day. I passed it by several times in search of something I'd like better. My husband convinced me to give it a chance and watch it. I enjoyed it and some of the performances are still lingering in my mind. Of course, there's Denzel's and Ethan Hawke's nominated performances. But what about Macy Gray? She should give acting another go. She was simply captivating in it.

Ever see bloggers put their blog lists in categories? That's handy. I suppose. But it depends on how it's done. I've seen weblogs that will categorize their lists in sections like, "Daily Reads", "Monthly Reads", and "Every Now and Then Reads". Why don't they go ahead and spell it out? "My Favorite Reads", "Occasionally Have Something Significant To Say Reads", "Totally Lame, But For Reasons I Don't Quite Understand Will List Them Anyway Reads". It's your blog, do it how you want, that's the independent web way and all, which I totally get behind. But, I'd never ever consider listing YOUR blog on my "Occasional Reads", or "Not Totally Lame Reads" lists. You're ALL favorites to me.

Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction....The chain reaction of evil-hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars-must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.

I remember how distraught the country was as we watched this great man lose his biggest fight of all to racial ignorance. I had thought some progress with racial harmony had been made until Dr King got shot, only to realize we hadn't even begun to fight against the ugly stain of racial injustice.

My site wouldn't get these strange search requests if I didn't have that damn tag line. [does this blog make my ass look big?] Can you imagine all the crazies that end up here looking for all sorts of strange "ass"? Here are some of the latest gems.....

Look at my ass

iso ass

rate my ass

cartoon characters in bikinis - [not ass-related, but sure is freaky]

she's my down ass, with the round ass

nice ass

ass tulips [X 2, do I want to know what this means?]

ass of the month

big-o-ass,

.....and others way too gross for even me to mention. Other oddities are people, who I surmise, don't want me to know where they're coming from and just type in "Susan". You'll eventually find me like that; probably after you've scrolled your leetle mouse wheel off.

»Zackie Achmat, 40, is South Africa's most prominent AIDS activist, and chairman of the Treatment Action Campaign. He found out that he was H.I.V. positive in 1990, and has had AIDS since 1997. He can afford antiretroviral drugs, but in 1998 he vowed not to take them until everyone in South Africa could. That day is inching closer, largely due to the work of the campaign. For Mr. Achmat it may not arrive soon enough. Mr Achmat's courage is phenomonal.

Read Rolling Stones' fans discussing Sunday night's, Jan 12, concert at the Fleet Center in Boston. Onto Madison Square Garden in New York this Thursday and Saturday; then Chicago.

»January 13 - On this day in history, in 1967, The Rolling Stones appear on TV's "Ed Sullivan Show" and are forced to change the lyrics of "Let's Spend the Night Together" to "Let's Spend Some Time Together" during the performance. It's hard to believe that that little phrase was once considered risqué.

Yippee! Duke still undefeated after a 74 - 55 win over Wake Forest tonight. Both teams went into the game undefeated with 10 - 0 records. This is an exciting time of year for College basketball fans. The Playoffs are usually around the end of March, so the stakes are high from here on out.

»Women United Against War. Code Pink. This group of concerned women cannot morally consent to war while paths of peace and negotiation have not been pursued to their fullest. We call on women around the world to rise up and oppose the war in Iraq. We call on mothers, grandmothers, sisters and daughters, on workers, students, teachers, healers, artists, writers, singers, poets, and every ordinary outraged woman willing to be outrageous for peace. If you feel this may interest you, please take a look around.

»I had quoted a rumor I'd read about the possibility of George Michael singing with Queen. I have read two different stories this weekend denying that rumor. NO QUEEN RE-UNION PLANS: It seems to be an annual event - rumours of Queen re-uniting with one singer or another. More often than not, it's George Michael attached to the rumour. To get to the bottom of this quickly, I e-mailed Queen guitarist Brian May. Straight from the horses mouth, Brian says: "There's no truth in this rumour whatsoever."

»Spike Lee's 25th Hour tells the story of a businessman's last day of freedom before the start of his seven-year prison sentence. With Edward Norton. Love him.

»Roman Polanski's The Pianist tells the story of a Polish Jew, a classical musician, who survived the Holocaust through stoicism and good luck. This is not a thriller and avoids any temptation to crank up suspense or sentiment; it is the pianist's witness to what he saw and what happened to him.

»Good weekend for catching a movie. Shirl was wondering if Blogger just gives HER fits when trying to post something. I tried to assure her that Blogger doesn't discriminate. It gives everyone fits. But we usually know how to work around it. I like Blogger a lot. I also enjoyed working with Movable Type. The people that run these systems just don't get enough praise. As many bloggers as these systems accomodate, the service we get really is outstanding.

»I am still SO disgusted about this family having their dog shot at a highway stop by Tennessee State Troopers. I gave the troopers my "Dickhead" award Jan 5. That post can be found if you scroll down below. Also on CNN. I hope this story doesn't die until everyone else is as disgusted as I am and the troopers are held accountable for their fuck-up. Good Morning America and the Today Show had this family on today. [They live about 20 miles from me in Saluda, NC]

»The music industry STILL owes you $20! Every US resident who bought a CD in the US between 1995 and 2000 is entitled to up to $20 from the music cartel as part of a court-mandated settlement over the labels' illegal price-fixing, which is one way that the music industry has ripped off the public. All you need to do is sign up at this site, and the RIAA will mail you a check. If so many people sign up that the settlement ends up getting spread too thin, the RIAA will mail charitable organizations the checks instead. You can't lose! Unless you don't sign up.

»Anyone remember Captain Beefheart? They were a strange band in the seventies that were in the same humorous intellectual vein as Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. A 1970 album, Trout Mask Replica, is a record that repeatedly makes it onto critics' lists under headings like "Most Important Recordings Ever Made" and "Albums That Make You a Music Loser If You Don't Own Them." He runs a few businesses now. Online is Clamazon, a Web site for rare and weird new and collectible music you can buy or sell if that's your thing.

Welcome
Hell, yes! I see you got here allright. Have you updated my url yet? Go ahead. I'll wait for you. I have new templates I may use later for this place, but I like the flexibility of this site for now. It was a challenge to duplicate this site to Blogger's specs. I'm satisfied with the comments box I made. OK. Obligatory welcome post out of the way. Let's shoot some shit....

How're You Gonna Keep 'Em Down On The Farm?

"Resident Bush is a romantic at heart and a devoted family man," explains the heavily shellacked automaton with the frozen smile, his wifey, Laura Bush. In a recent Good Housekeeping interview, we don't hear about the Cuervo body shots or what a 'bush' man really means. Instead, she spins a tale of slack-jawed bewilderment, tales of sitting in rockers on the front porch of the ranch house and staring blankly out into the south 40, er 40,000. "My George is a 'windshield cowboy' now, meaning he drives a pickup truck, you know. I sometimes miss our good old days here in Texas when the chi-dren ["l" omission intentional] were small and George would give me an occasional ass-grab after coming home late from sharing an 8-ball at a frat party. Now, where are my manners? Can I get you a glass of sweet tea? Cooking sherry?"

Rumor has it that Queen have tapped singer George Michael to replace late frontman Freddie Mercury for a possible 2003 reunion tour. I don't know that anyone should fill in for Freddie Mercury.

Former Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck and ex-Doobie Brothers/Steely Dan member Jeff "Skunk" Baxter have been confirmed as guest musicians on Birdland, the first Yardbirds release in 35 years. Well, Sunday was a sports fan's dream. This sports fan, anyway. Duke's basketball team beat Clemson, to go to 9-0 and may lead the ACC after being in 3rd place before the game. And a fantastic football game with San Francisco beating the Giants, after coming from behind 24 points! Hell of a game. The 49ers' rally was the biggest in NFC playoff history.

I'm back after a belated Christmas visit with my family. The whole experience was delightful. We kept the hellish arguments to a minimum and the yelling and cussing to a mild roar. I still sang 'I'll Be Home For Christmas' on the drive over like I do every year; dear daughter played 'Name that Roadkill'. The best thing was seeing my sister and Mother. Next best thing was looking through very old photo albums of my grandmother's I hadn't seen since I was small.

UPDATE: 12:15 pm

Haven't given out my "Dickhead Award" in quite some time. The award is presented to someone in the news who's done something so radically stupid that you want to say, "What a dickhead". The honor goes to the Tennessee officers who shot and killed this family's dog while they were mistakenly stopped as suspects in a felony. The officers pulled him over and the passengers were ordered out of the car and handcuffed. Then they drew their guns on this family returning from a family visit. The dogs travelling with them also jumped out, as the family pleaded to let them close their car doors, and one officer shot the family pet's head right off in front of them all. Said the daughter, "I had never seen my father or brother cry until that day." The family was able to carry home the remains of "Patton" where they buried him in their backyard. This family lives in the next county over from me. CNN is also airing this story.
