:: GOP Allied Media Group Orders Affiliates To Preempt "Nightline" Show Honoring Slain U.S. Troops [link]

:: Citing political reasons, the Sinclair Broadcast Group ordered its ABC affiliates to preempt a broadcast of ABC News' "Nightline" where host Ted Koppel will read the names of every U.S. soldier killed in combat in Iraq. 98 percent of Sinclair's political contributions in 2004 have gone to Republican candidates.

:: “That’s ridiculous,” Beth Whitener told the Asheville Citizen-Times. Whitener’s husband, 19-year-old Army Pfc. Joey Whitener was killed Nov. 15 when two Black Hawk helicopters crashed in Mosul, Iraq.

“I think it’ s more than appropriate to show those faces because they were over there fighting for our freedom. I think they have a right to be honored and shown on TV.” More from soldier's families here.

:: "Despite the denials by a spokeswoman for the show, the action appears to be motivated by a political agenda designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in Iraq." said Sinclair.

:: skippy has a great piece filled with pertinent links on the Sinclair Group Niteline censorship.

:: My ABC Ted Koppel station is owned by the Sinclair Group so I won't be able to see the show tonight. Here's what I sent FAIR and to the WLOS station:

Dear WLOS:

I am disappointed in your decision to boycott the Ted Koppel Niteline show tonight, April 30, 2004.

I remember as a younger girl looking at the pictures in Life magazine of fallen US soldiers. And respectfully watching them arrive at Dover to much decorum and celebrated fanfare. I appreciated the effort even more when I could see a family during their terrible times. The nation joined together in their grief as I was able to sympathize with them.

Ultimately, I was able to see how important diplomacy is. How important it is to make every effort to avoid war to begin with. But if inevitable, how great the sacrifice.

I can see Iran or North Korea or China censoring these kinds of programs. But not the US. And for Sinclair to claim Ted Koppel has an agenda tied to this program only appears desperate and makes me ask what can they be afraid of if this show airs?

Have any advertisers pulled out? That's usually a television station's programming guideline. Picking and choosing what to show is censorship. Pure and simple. And it will not stand.

Sincerely,

Susan XXXXXXXXX

Asheville, NC

May 9, 1969. It was a few months before I'd turn 17. In my new red Buick convertible Bill Sherrod and I drove down to Charlotte that weekend to see the Hendrix concert. We smoked a little weed and had a few beers that we opened with a church key.

At the coliseum we saw cops in riot gear (helmets, chest shields, and various whacking and spraying apparati standing arms length apart in front of the stage facing the crowd), and a friendly sea of hippies, as we took our seats in the balcony. Jimi opened the set with Purple Haze, and I saw why the riot squad was there.

It was as if someone suddenly flipped a switch on. People were charging towards Jimi and diving off the balconies onto the floor below to get a closer look at our new guitar God. He played from his Are You Experienced album with his teeth, behind his head, and setting the guitar on fire and playing it between his legs. When we could get our bearing, our stoned selves ended up face to face with the stoned-face riot cops by the stage, which happened to be the best view in the house, while the crowd was still surging forward just to be as close as possible to the great and powerful Jimi.

Leaving Charlotte that night, I had much to think about. I knew I'd experienced something quite phenomenal; even sacred. In three short months, Max Yasgur's farm would be the venue of my epiphany-bound spirit. I had been inducted into a very special club inhabited in some sweet, sweet universe never to touch down.

Snipped from my impending tale of Memoirs. Ed.

Bush 'Seizure' Answer to his Awful Press Conference Performance?

Note: The following material is from a reporter with access to the White House and Presidential press briefings. Some of this material has surfaced before but only in small segments. If any of this is true and not the product of an unhappy person, we are all in serious trouble. Ed. And I'm just passing it along as a "clever bit of speculation."

"Vice President Cheney is the de facto President of the United States. When he arrives at the White House for one of his "briefings" of the President, all employees are cleared from the West Wing and especially from the Presidential office suites. Cheney arrives in an escorted armored limousine surrounded by his own personal, heavily armed bodyguard and is always shown directly into the President's office. It is reliably reported by [redacted] that Bush has a thick pad of lined, yellow note paper on his desk, placed there by [redacted] just before the Vice President arrives."

"At some time in the past, according to both [redacted] and [redacted] the President suffered what one of his aides called "a very minor seizure" and as a result of this, the President has a very difficult time following any unscripted conversations. For this reason, his staff carefully and aggressively protect the President from "unexpected" questions that he is not capable of answering."

"The President takes oral medication at least twice a day according to [redacted] because of an unspecified "indisposition' and this subject is strictly off limits for any casual staff conversation."

"At one point during a staff conference, the President stood up and began to speak in an unknown language. Mr. Rove was able to stop the President and get him to resume his seat. It was reported by [redacted] that for a period of time (about fifteen minutes) after this incident, the President appeared to be 'somewhat confused and very inarticulate.'"

“Bush hold as few meetings with the public, including the press, as possible. We get reams of official papers informing us of this or that new directive. Those of us who have an inside track with the staff are taken to dinner and given the questions to ask Bush. These are questions he has been thoroughly briefed on and has memorized the answers for. Anyone who persists in pushing the envelope gets a rocket from the Rove people and does not get invited back.”

Above c & p the way the article reads. Even if there's a kernel of truth in there someplace, you have to wonder about the agenda behind the intended or covert leak. [link]

Charlie Is My Darling

Shot in Belfast and Dublin over the space of three days during the Rolling Stones' 1965 Irish tour 'Charlie Is My Darling' enjoys cult status as the great missing Stones documentary and gets three rare screenings during Triptych courtesy of the Stones once upon a time svengali in chief Andrew Loog Oldham.

Among the memorable fly on the wall scenes captured on film are Mick and Keef drunkenly trying out their Elvis impersonations and Brian Jones prophetically reflecting on his lack of a future with the band he had founded while, the songs featured on the soundtrack include 'Get Off Of My Cloud', 'Heart Of Stone', 'Play With Fire' and 'Satisfaction'. Sure would love to see this documentary. [more...]

Fresh hope for Suu Kyi's release. Burma's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi could be freed from house arrest within a few days, according to her party chairman, Aung Shwe. Burman's first democratically elected President has been under house arrest by the military strongmen who rule Burma. They have made the country a global byword for backwardness and brutality. Absolutely phenomenal being the first democratically elected president in Burma. Outstanding that the president is a woman. Soon after elected, the ruling junta arrested her and the world waits for her release. Some think it may be soon this time. Many nations have boycotted Burma and their products.

Oh, yeah, I chumped out on the No TV thing. (See previous post) I had the television on from Sunday night to see one of my all time favorite films, "La Femme Nikita", starring the breath-takingly beautiful Anne Parillaud. The original French version (1990) by director Luc Besson who also wrote and directed another favorite, The Fifth Element. The Nikita music is so pulsating and mesmerizing; quite possibly the best movie score I've ever heard.

And then there's CNN International humming along evenings in the background until Trio, Link TV, Sundance, or IFC has something good to watch.

Witchy and Anathea already said they weren't giving up their tv either. Have you ever given up television viewing? Or maybe some don't even watch it at all. If you're an avid viewer, it may take a lot for you to stop watching, but I'd like to think I'm a wise viewer, and that I've given wise informative viewing ideas to my kids as well. Besides, I couldn't possibly miss The Truth About Gay Animals on Trio Wednesday night, could I?

April 27 - The Weather Underground

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, several hundred young women and men tried to spark a socialist revolution. The Weathermen waged a low-level war against the U.S. government: bombing the Capitol building, breaking Timothy Leary out of prison and evading one of the largest FBI manhunts in history. The Weathermen were a surviving faction of the SDS. (Where are the Weathermen now?) [link]

{Past Re-visited}

I recall Cliff Potts came by the university in his converted old bread truck and parked in front of the Student Center where all us 'ne'er do wells' were lounging. He set up a table with SDS pamphlets and we all signed up and discussed Nixon's pending visit to the campus and talked to us about the ROTC program and how to take over that building in protest of Vietnam. Within a year I was onboard with NOW, SDS, and for fun, Montrose, a performance troupe of drama and art majors and assorted strays named for the historic Montrose building that now housed many university students (read: freaks). Why do all my daughter's friends happen to be gay and bisexual? Is it her? Yes, it's her. She's always been uninhibited and very open and told us she was bisexual when she was 13 and she's now 15. Which is fine with her Father and I. I hope I'm able to provide the right support, advice or encouragement when it's needed.

We're happy she's free enough to talk to us about something so personal. She's had some hard times at school because of her honesty. Although it is a different era, being gay is still not acceptable to some. And never will be.

I'm not sure if she's still searching for who she is, and parenting a teen daughter who's still exploring her own sexuality is uncharted territory for us. But if she ever needs a soft place to land she knows we'll always provide that for her; gay, straight, bi, or whatever.

Romantic and Voluptuous, By Mark Miller

"Romantic, sensitive, sincere, caring, honest, affectionate 25-year-old non-smoking male, a Kevin Costner lookalike, with great sense of humor, Ph.D. in Business, runs own advertising agency, enjoys sports, nature, movies, theater, restaurants, dancing--seeks sincere woman for friendship and good conversation."

Dear Romantic: I nearly fainted when I read your personals ad, because it pretty much described my ideal man. So even though I'm sure you'll be overwhelmed with responses, here's mine: I'm a bright, honest, loving, considerate, vivacious, outgoing 23-year-old, blonde, voluptuous, non-smoking female, often described as a Darryl Hannah lookalike. I am independently wealthy, and love exotic travel, gourmet cooking, and passionate embraces in front of a roaring fire. I am yearning for your reply.

Dear Voluptuous: Thank you for your wonderful letter in response to my ad. Coincidentally, you described my ideal woman. Unfortunately, I wasn't exactly 100% honest about myself in my ad. But your letter touched me to such a degree that I've decided to stop deluding myself and others. So even though it may cost me the loss of meeting you, here's the truth: I'm a 46-year-old Abe Vigoda lookalike, who smokes like a chimney, dropped out of high school to steal cars, still lives with my parents, and haven't the slightest idea how to function in a social situation.

Dear Romantic: I can't tell you how relieved I was to receive your refreshingly honest letter. I, too, have had it with all the artifice, the game-playing, the misrepresentation. So please allow me to revise my initial ad, as well: I'm a 52-year-old, enormously overweight woman, interested solely in my next meal. I suffer from indescribable body odor, but it doesn't bother me too much, as I spend most of my days dealing with the voices that I hear, commanding me to do the bidding of Emperor Borgar, ruler of my home planet. I am currently working, gutting fish, at Harvey's Carp-O-Rama, but it's the evening shift, so I have my days free to tend to my open sores and seventeen cats. I also like looking in people's windows while drooling. [more »]

{bush's vietnam?}

What can you say about Iraq? That it's 'George Bush's Vietnam'? What's wrong with Ted Kennedy's statement?

Iraq is not war lite like Kuwait, Bosnia, Granada. It's shaping up to be a war of Vietnam proportions, Vietnam atrocities. Not a between-meal-snack or an Atkins or South Beach diet kind of war. A main course war with real butter and oil. A deep-fried, stick to your ribs, chicken-fried steak with gravy, mashed potatos, salad, mamma's homemade biscuits, and a glass of sweet tea kind of war.

* The BROKEN HALLELUJAH name is taken from "Hallelujah", a song by Leonard Cohen.

* Easy Bake Coven , my previous website, ran from 2002 - 2009. It was time for a change so it will now be a mostly music-related website. All of our old EBC posts are stored there and here as well.
