Peggy Olson Knows What She Wants

Monday, August 31, 2009

"I"m Peggy Olson. And I want to smoke some marijuana."

I've been rooting for the character of Peggy to be a little bolder but it is, after all, 1963. To my surprise she grew a pair last night when she smoked some weed with her colleagues and took over the meeting.

My dear husband is in the hospital

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

concerning some extreme back pain he'd been having. He's one of those men who won't go to the doctor until he's totally fouled up in a major way. Why are so many men like this?

The back pain led to numbness in his legs this past week and then finally paralysis in his lower body about 5 or 6 days ago. He let it go this far before going to see about it.

He went into the hospital Monday. After going thru some testing they said that he has either an infection or a tumor between two vertebras so he's scheduled for surgery tomorrow afternoon. He's lost 50 lbs this year. (He's 5 years older than me.)

I'm angry at him for letting it go this long and everyone has been on him to do something about it. I'm also scared because he looks so frail and small in that hospital bed.

He's in one the best hospitals in the country and it has all the specialists you could ever hope to need so I feel good about that anyway.

Just waiting to see how the surgery goes tomorrow afternoon and hope that he can gain use of his legs again soon.

If you offer up prayers, please send one up for him. Thanks for listening. xoxo

The Exile of Ginger Baker

Saturday, August 22, 2009

he starts his days with curses and a morphine inhaler but still plays competitive polo
Around a year and a half ago, Brooklyn writer Jay Bulger grew obsessed with making a documentary about one of the greatest — and crankiest — drummers to ever walk the earth, Ginger Baker.

He moved to Africa and located the onetime member of Cream and Blind Faith in a gated community, where the 69-year-old musician and polo enthusiast currently resides; he has previously been booted from homes in England, Nigeria, Italy and America.

In his feature "The Devil and Ginger Baker" in RS' new issue, Bulger details Baker’s current condition (he starts his days with curses and a morphine inhaler but still plays competitive polo) and asks Baker to look back at his youth, when he was training to be cyclist in the Tour de France and turned to drumming only after he was hit by a cab and wrecked his bike. (Watch Baker discuss his crushed dream in footage from Bulger’s forthcoming documentary 10 Goal Drummer, above).

Nice piece by Jay Bulger and I really look forward to the documentary to come.

New Rule: No Shame in Being the Sorry Party

Bill Maher
Host of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher"
Posted: August 21, 2009 10:42 AM

New Rule: If Mitt Romney, Karl Rove and Sarah Palin all think America has never done anything wrong, we must be doing something wrong. Look at them: an empty suit, an empty heart and an empty head. It looks like the news team on Good Morning Hell. And what they've been competing about lately is who would not apologize the most. America is infallible, and apologies are horrible things that must never, ever be given. Except by me when I make a joke about the Pope. "We're perfect -- deal with it," is their new handshake. But I say, what's wrong with America occasionally saying, "I'm sorry"? Because these are the three sorriest white people I've ever seen.

In his first week as president, Obama did an interview with Arab TV in which he said, "We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect." Thought crime! And then he went to Cairo and violated one of those absolute eternal rules the Right Wing is always making up out of thin air: "The president must never apologize on foreign soil. Lest our allies begin to doubt that we're assholes. "

But what did Obama actually say to make Karl Rove's head explode and the popcorn fly out? Cover your children's ears: When he was asked if he believed in American exceptionalism, he said he did, the same way "the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks in Greek exceptionalism." Yes, our so-called president actually said people in other countries might like their countries better. I was so shocked I nearly dropped the Bible I was using to help me masturbate into my gun.

In her farewell speech -- if only -- Sarah Palin kept telling us "how she's wired." Now I'm not a doctor, or an electrician -- but this is faulty wiring, this worldview that, in her words, "we should never apologize for our country." Really? Never? Not for slavery? Or Japanese internment camps, or if we tortured the wrong guy at Guantanamo? The Indians? Nothing, Sarah? "The Real Housewives of Atlanta"? Shouldn't John McCain apologize for... you?

Vuk: The Plains

Thursday, August 20, 2009

"27-year multi-instrumental Finnish-American Emily Cheeger, an ex-Dirty Projector (she sang on The Getty Address, did various singing percussion from 2002-2005), who currently plays a pump organ (and half a dozen instruments) while belting out vocals that can be beautifully fragile and beautifully taunting and, in general, always straight-up powerful." [MORE]

Sounds like freak folk White Chalk-era PJ Harvey.

"...emotional bouts with death-gospel drama, esoteric organ-and-harmonium requiems, percussive chants and unbridled, youthful whimsy." Get The Plains here. Vuk Myspace.

Almost baroque in her arrangements on the new album, (it was just announced that she's now touring the US with Fever Ray) Vuk will be stripping down her songs to their bare bones, performing solo with a harmonium and autoharp, allowing her unique voice and unconventional songwriting to take center stage. I've never heard of her until lately and I like her style a lot. Should be one hell of a concert with Karin (Fever Ray) and Emily (Vuk).

A Is for Acid, G is for Grok

Monday, August 17, 2009

In John Bassett McCleary's book, "freak" is "a self-denigrating term used by hippies to describe themselves." And "flower power" is "pacifism, the turning of one's cheek."

That's because McCleary's book is The Hippie Dictionary, a 720-page archive of a now-vanishing lexicon.

"I started out carrying a pad of paper and pen, and writing down every word that came to me in a conversation, book, or movie. That took over five years," the author says. "I then started writing out definitions that I remembered. Later, I went to the library and dug into other slang and ethnic dictionaries to verify my definitions." That's when McCleary was startled to discover how many words on his list had never before been officially defined: "I also realized that much of the language of the time consisted of phrases — words combined to form new ideas or feelings, such as 'right on,' 'far out,' 'get it on.'"
via | link

I don't really know why exactly, but words from this era still make me queasy. Other people would have described me as a hippie. (It's hipp-IE, not hipp-Y.) I never uttered the phrase "right-on". And "far out"? -- maybe twice. "Get it on"? Ne-ver. We said "ball" which wasn't quite as crass as "fucking". ha!

In my opinion these phrases and idioms were repeated by the media and were used in movies and eventually perpetuated by weekend hippies or late bloomers but for some reason I found them cringe-worthy and embarrassing. To me, someone who hit on all the hippie slang was probably a narc; which reminds me of lots of fun stories for another time. Good times.

The Synchronic Divination

The Book of Synchronicity is the equivalent of the I-Ching in the Western magical tradition, and it works by similar rules.

If you are worthy, if you approach this Book with respect, if you are able to look deep inside yourself, in it you will find all the answers you are looking for.

"One night I prepared the question and consulted the Book. I unwrapped it from its black cloth and facing north I opened it on the Focal Page, the page with the black circle in the middle, and breathed deeply several times. I recited the ritual invocation and took the die from its red bag, casting it for the first time: I obtained a six. So I opened the book at chapter six..."

See what *The Book of Synchronicity holds for you with a reading. Mine was a tad unsettling this morning.

Saturday Morning Me STORY

Saturday, August 15, 2009

I had a feature on Easy Bake Coven that I began in March 2003 called Saturday Morning Me.

I posted a few lines about my surroundings one Saturday and then people started joining in commenting on their Saturday morning and we had a lot of fun reading about each others stories the next five years or so.

As it grew we decided it didn't have to be morning and it didn't have to be Saturday. But we tried to keep it to the weekend and any peak into the weekend would be welcomed.

There are 179+ posts in this category which I was able to import to this site from EBC, but sadly, without the comments. Anyway, below is a homage to the Saturday Morning Me's and I open it up again for your comments! Type it here in the comments or on your own website and leave us a comment.

Guitar Giants Jam in New Documentary, 'It Might Get Loud'

Thursday, August 13, 2009

Forget sex. Leave out the drugs. Just take rock 'n' roll and zero in on one precise element: the guitar. "It Might Get Loud," the new documentary produced and directed by Davis Guggenheim ("An Inconvenient Truth"), assembles three iconic players, U2’s the Edge, Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Jack White of the White Stripes (and new band Dead Weather, on drums), to talk about their signature instrument

"... whatever differences might be at play, it's all a wash when Page, in one of the jam sessions he leads, begins the coiling, heated riff to "Whole Lotta Love." The Edge looks flabbergasted. White looks like he's watching his beloved walk down the aisle. Those are the unifying moments; the ones where they each look like they’re falling in love."
Coming to NY and LA August 14th.

Lords Of The Revolution

This is a 4 part series on VH1.

* Mohammad Ali
* Cheech & Chong
* The Black Panthers

THE BLACK PANTHERS

Their in-your-face form of protest against the establishment had never been seen before. Carrying weapons, marching in formation, and... helping the poor. Helping the disenfranchised.

I was in high school at the time and I was loving it. I was an anti-authority junior rebel and was pretty stoked when someone else bucked the system on such a grand scale in the fight for equality.

After Huey Newton and Bobby Seale went to jail, Eldridge Cleaver moved to the forefront of the Black Panthers. His wife, Kathleen Cleaver was also a force. They all became heroes to hippies. (I've always hated that word.) Anyway, you may enjoy these programs.

Lauren Dukoff's 'Family' of Free Spirits

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Devendra Banhart and Lauren Dukoff walk around the Space 15 Twenty gallery in Hollywood, giggling. Friends since they met at Malibu High School 10 years ago, the pair, who call each other Obi (Banhart's middle name) and Lo, are also artistic collaborators: Dukoff has been photographing the indie folkie-turned-major-label-star since Banhart was spending his afternoons practicing piano in the high school music room.

The photos collected in her new book, "Family," offer an intimate glimpse into the lives of Banhart and an ever-widening creative tribe that has formed here in L.A.

Spanning the period from May 2006 until late last year, "Family" follows Banhart from stages around the world -- including a headlining gig at Carnegie Hall -- to private moments writing at his desk and playing guitar on the deck of his Topanga Canyon home, where sketches, lyrics and found art decorate every wall, and the crimson velvet couch was said to have belonged to Jim Morrison.

Wearing sandals, bell-bottom jeans and a vest in one shot, and suspenders and sunny yellow jazz oxfords in another, Banhart also reveals the original fashion sensibility that has inspired international designers such as Roberto Cavalli and Karl Lagerfeld and local names like Trasteverine and South Paradiso.

What the hell is SOMA anyway?

Myth: SOMA Magazine is a local publication solely based in the South of Market district of San Francisco.

Fact: Originally an ancient Indo-Persian term involing ecstasy, and later used by the Greeks and Romans to refer to the body, the word "soma" has meant many things over time. Aldous Huxley described it as a holiday from the ordinary, while William S Burroughs used it to hypothesize the posibility of a on-addictive form of opium. SOMA also happens to be the name of one of the longest-running arts and culture publications in the country.

Today, with an international readership, the publication finds itself at the forefront of what is possible in the world of fashion, art, music, film, and design. It strives to keep a promise made over two decades ago to showcase up-and-coming talent, pay homage to the legends among us and celebrate the avant-garde.

Down a Rabbit Hole to Meth and Its Dysfunction

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

The Black Acid Co-Op is a labyrinthine series of rooms constructed inside Deitch Projects's warehouse space on Wooster. From the moment you enter, you are completely absorbed by the surreal, completely enveloping atmosphere the immaculately constructed space creates.

"The highlight (and by far creepiest part) of the installation are the two, true-to-life home Meth labs constructed in trailers set seamlessly into the space. When I entered the first Meth lab, I was immediately struck by a visceral reaction to the clutter, mess, and general disarray of the space. It was entirely believable. Every detail from the carpeting on the floor to the box of Sudafed on the kitchen counter is believable, and horrifying."
The exhibit is over this weekend but I thought it was worth noting.

Cronenberg and Cosmopolis

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

David Cronenberg will write and direct Cosmopolis, an adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel about a 28-year-old millionaire’s day-long travels through Manhattan in pursuit of a haircut.

The novel is about much more than that, of course, but it still represents an unusual project for Cronenberg, who recently has entered a creative renaissance with movies very different from the ones that made him famous, namely Eastern Promises and A History of Violence. He plans to shoot Cosmopolis next year.

Ooh La La

Saturday, August 1, 2009

"When you read that there are four young men from Sydney western suburbs who took their name from Rod Stewart’s old band The Faces, you should be in no doubt that the classic 60’s rock sensibilities don’t end with the name. There’s more than a little AC/DC about the track, delivered with just enough of the Bons (though with a falsetto the late Scott could only dream of to pull it off. In fact, that falsetto seems a favourite tool of singer Simon Meli, which on other songs sits him somewhere between an early Freddie Mercury meets Robert Plant, with the band making a reasonable fist of keeping up." Single Review - The Drum Media

"Ooh La La is a rock band …….here they could join Australia ’s great list of party bands. The songs sound like they have been recorded in a sweaty studio back in 1972 and, as far as the band is concerned, Led Zeppelin, T-Rex and The Who are the only bands that existed." MEDIASEARCH

Solid rock and roll. What's not to like?
