To understand the DVD compilation Our Favorite Things, one has to comprehend the basic tenets of Negativland’s philosophy. Thematically, the band appears to follow the William Burroughs’ method of cut and paste creativity. The notorious beat author, responsible for the incomprehensibly brilliant Naked Lunch, used to write long passages, tear out the typed page, cut the sentences into soundbite snippets, and reconfigure the prose into new, unexpected phraseology. Much of the music Negativland makes is standard rock and electronica stomps. There’s even a peppering of pop and pleasant valley sundriness to it. But the lyrics, when there are any, follow a more free flowing, stream of subconsciousness pattern. read more

Eighth wonder of the world? The stunning temples secretly carved out below ground by 'paranormal' eccentric

Nestling in the foothills of the Alps in northern Italy, 30 miles from the ancient city of Turin, lies the valley of Valchiusella. Peppered with medieval villages, the hillside scenery is certainly picturesque.

But it is deep underground, buried into the ancient rock, that the region's greatest wonders are concealed.

Here, 100ft down and hidden from public view, lies an astonishing secret - one that has drawn comparisons with the fabled city of Atlantis and has been dubbed 'the Eighth Wonder of the World' by the Italian government.

For weaving their way underneath the hillside are nine ornate temples, on five levels, whose scale and opulence take the breath away.

Constructed like a three-dimensional book, narrating the history of humanity, they are linked by hundreds of metres of richly decorated tunnels and occupy almost 300,000 cubic feet - Big Ben is 15,000 cubic feet.

Few have been granted permission to see these marvels.

Indeed, the Italian government was not even aware of their existence until a few years ago.

TYLER RAMSEY

Asheville's Tyler Ramsey - now playing with Band of Horses

Sporting a beard that would make most men jealous and a talent that would make most women swoon, Tyler Ramsey is a songwriter who clearly values intricacy, quality songwriting, and atmospheric credibility. A guitarist whose stylistic range varies anywhere from gentle finger-picking treats to bluesy riffs of utmost enjoyability, Ramsey has the ability to capture a broad spectrum of emotions in his highly impressive solo material. Though he will likely be remembered for his solo career, Ramsey also serves as a backing and studio guitarist for a variety of acts located around his hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. More recently, he has been recognized as the opening act and part-time guitarist for Band of Horses. Though the highly touted indie-rock trio is based out of Seattle and not Ramsey’s own North Carolina, they are giving Ramsey a well-earned opportunity to try his hand at stardom. With the way that his new album sounds, I would not doubt that he reaches it.

Ectype's End

This introductory graphic is somewhat odd but trust me, this little animated short has amazing graphics.

3C70 is no more than a number. Forced into a clockwork world where his only purpose is to duplicate and multiply, he sets about his task without question. Within seconds, however, his small world is turned upside down when a strange plant upends the order of his simple life.

Ectype's End is a fast-paced and visually charged ride that combines hand-drawn characters with photographed locations. Featuring a quirky soundtrack that drives and describes the journey of its protaganist, Ectype's End approaches the age-old issue of conformity with a story that is suitable for all ages.

Here's a good example of Outsider Art. I've always had mixed feelings about it (as an Art major grad) but it does have it's merits.

Art Appreciation 101: You can look for balance and see that these colors are well balanced and well placed. Your eye travels all over the place. An artist will surreptitiously or sometimes blatantly move your eyes around the piece to take it all in and appreciate every single bit. Even the negative spaces play an important part in a final product. Another way to discern balance is to imagine the painting cut in half; vertically and horizontally. Is one side heavier than the other? More bold? Or do they compliment each other in color and in area?

LIZA LOU

Liza Lou is most known for her entirely bead-encrusted environments KITCHEN and BACK YARD that each took years of her life to create. Her medium of choice may be the diminutive glass bugle bead, but the resulting installations are anything but small scale. Her installations are truly labours of love that take countless hours of effort, so although the work for her most famous pieces was executed in the 90's, they are timeless representations of domestic life that are definitely worth seeing when the exhibitions travel. Kitchen is a monument to woman's work within the home, one created with millions of tiny beads glued onto the surfaces of many real kitchen objects. The installation is a full-sized kitchen of 168 square feet, fully-equipped with appliances, breakfast cereal and a sink overflowing with dirty dishes.
