Check out the link on the right side of my page here. (The words above the housewife with the tiny "bs" below it.) Now click on it. It's the "Blog Snob" site and it'll be different each time you come here. It illustrates an independant thinker's weblog/journal. The independants need to be encouraged. Read them.

Sisters
Today, I'm grateful for my sister, Robin. I don't think everyone appreciates the closeness of sisters. Am I saying that they have a more special bond than brothers? Or couples? Maybe I'm just trying to say that I'm thisclose to MY sister. It could be that we've always stayed in touch with each other or that we're just two years apart. We've shared marriage troubles, divorces, pregnancies, addictions, the death of our father, but it's only made us stronger. A whole lot of tears, but looking back I remember the silly times. We used to laugh about the stupidest stuff. I mean, fall in the floor laughing. I still feel so protective of her. It's hard to let go of that nurturing feeling being the older sister, I suppose. Yet, she's the first one I turn to when I need comforting. I couldn't imagine what it would have been like to grow up as an only child. If you have a sibling, I hope you're able to appreciate them as much as I appreciate Robin.

Thanks for the Heads-Up, Guys. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ridge, Mueller. Is there anyone who has not warned us of Armageddon over the past few weeks? As far as I can tell, the only slacker in this White House game of Wag the Dog is Spot.

You don't have to be a cynic to believe that the point of the warnings is not to save lives so much as to save political hides. After all, we can't go about our daily business much differently just because of these dire pronouncements. Nor have they budged the Homeland Security Office's color-coded "threat level" from its weaselly yellow. What this orchestrated chorus can do is guarantee that we duly credit the Bush administration for giving us a heads-up should disaster strike between now and Election Day 2004.

Our house is thrilled that Skyler will be entering high school in the fall. It was such a stressful eighth grade for us all. And she still needs to go to summer school. She's entering a time in her life where she'll come in contact with lots of influences--- both good and bad. So many teens her age (14) have already been in trouble with drugs and gangs, etc. The only rehab I see in her future is the "Facility For Teens Hooked On Phonics".

Ever notice how some bloggers play the "blog game"? Some of the bloggers just keep linking to each other with their mutual admiration society that it doesn't leave much room for objectivity. Then there's the true independant individuals who stand alone and play by their own rules and could care less who's reading their words. Most bloggers are independant people and very intelligent. I rejoice when I find these bloggers with no agenda. Danelle's is one of the most recent ones I've seen.

There is SO much talent in the weblog community. Real design artists and great writers. I wish I had time to read them all. Sigh.....

Fighting to Live as the Towers Died

From their last words, a haunting chronicle of the final 102 minutes at the World Trade Center has emerged, built on scores of phone conversations and e-mail and voice messages. These accounts, along with the testimony of the handful of people who escaped, provide the first sweeping views from the floors directly hit by the airplanes and above.

On this Memorial Day weekend, there's a moving story and lots of photos today in the New York Times about the first 102 minutes of the WTC attack. I am surprised that it's still as heart-wrenching for me to read the accounts today as it was when it happened. What I need is assurance that this can never happen on American soil again. And I wonder if I'll ever feel secure here anymore.

Robot can bring you a beer AND put the baby to sleep. Men everywhere reach for wallets. From YAHOO!

[The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: 5.25.2002] Saturday Vent

Your driver's license in 45 minutes or it's free. Now if we could just get them to deliver.

In case of nuclear attack, the evacuation route for all Yankees is I-285. (another never-ending rant of North V South)

I think Darva Conger is now in her 17th minute of fame and needs to quit.

Will you men quit telling me you're in the middle of getting a divorce? I'm in the middle of losing weight, but until we both are finished, I am fat and you are married.

The Phoenix FBI agent who wrote the memo on Arabs in flight training will probably be demoted now that he's embarrassed his superiors.

We need an emergency plan to protect Atlanta's key landmarks -- the Varsity, the Big Chicken and the Krispy Kreme on Ponce.

A sampling taken from the Atlanta paper's Daily Vent section.

Remember school bonfires? Skyler went to one at school last night. Good to see that it's still a part of the middle school atmosphere. I wonder if she knows that these are some of the best years of her life? The eighth grade was a wonderful time in my life. I sure hope she's having a blast, too.

Helen Thomas KO's Ari

The superb Helen Thomas is already an esteemed member of the Media in Exile roster, but her work at the Friday, May 17th press briefing by Ari Fleischer was especially noteworthy. Ari was dripping with patronizing slime as he attempted to put Thomas "in her place" with several pointed remarks. Each time, Thomas shot right back at him, besting him spectacularly. Ari was displaying an insulting, smiling, head-patting attitude as he dismissed Helen's excellent questions about Cheney pressuring Daschle to not investigate 9-11. Helen really had him on the ropes. Ari practically sneered as he made remarks to the effect that "everyone knows what you think" or "we all know you have an opinion on these matters."

Thomas fired back that we all know his opinion, too.

Ari replied that he is entitled to an opinion. Thomas went for the kill and said, "So am I." It was a tense exchange and did not deter Helen from her mission. Later, as Ari began another non-answer to another journalist, you could hear Helen interject, "Do you know what he thinks, too?" -- a remark left off the official transcripts of the briefing.

I really admire Helen Thomas and have watched her for decades now. It's refreshing to see someone put that smug little troll, Ari Fleischer, in his place.

USATODAY.com - Ground zero workers planning final day at site.

"USA Today"

On New York

I don't know that other people around the world actually know the enormity of the task of removing all the Ground Zero debris. Less than 90,000 tons of debris remains at the bottom of the giant crater in lower Manhattan after nearly nine months of round-the-clock toil since Sept. 11, when the twin towers were reduced to 1.7 million tons of burning rubble 10 stories high.

Police: Suspect planned smiley face bomb pattern

On CNN - US
Do I really believe this story? Nah...It probably just sounded good at the time, so that's what he went with. I don't think this poor guy knows how serious his offense is yet. Luke, my boy, it's not like getting caught for rolling somebody's yard on Halloween. I don't know how to break it to ya, but you're probably going to J-A-I-L.

Ozzy on Jay Leno

I'm sitting here watching Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne on Jay Leno right now. He was telling about the time when he was 17 and he wanted to be something exciting, so he became a burglar. He knew he should get himself some gloves; all burglars had gloves. So he bought some driver gloves. The kind with no fingers. (Now, don't get ahead of me here...) He was sitting in prison inside of a week.

I'm still rooting for Ozzy. I'm all for anyone who came out the other side of drug addiction.

Skyler feeling puny...

Now Sky's throat is all swollen and she couldn't even swallow or speak last night. About 6 hours after the doctor looked at her throat, etc. And he didn't even notice that her throat was red or swollen. This morning she insisted on going to school. She's not so devoted to school; she doesn't want to miss talking to her friends. And after school, she seemed much better. She's also on a diet--a little extreme, I must say. She's lost about 15 lbs in 3 weeks or so. I wish she'd start eating a little more.....

I made Skyler a doctor's appointment today, so I'll pick her up a little early from school. She has terrible congestion and is achy all over. It does appear to be of the cold/flu/sinus variety, but this time my intuition tells me to have her checked out by a pro and that's what I'm going to do.

I've installed a different comment system, and unfortunately it wiped out all previous comments but I like this system better. It's more reliable. So, if you'd like to comment, post away.

I never realized that when you become a parent, your feelings are so connected to your children so that when they're sad, you are just as sad. I previously thought that we, as parents, would be empathetic, but it goes much more beyond empathy. You actually feel their pain, too. So, feeling their pain, coupled with hurting for them as their parent, you can be mortified about their discomfort/adventure/tragedy. Never think for a moment that your parents take your problems lightly. I'm here to tell you that it just ain't so.

Bakersville Fire

A fire broke out about 60 miles from here in the jail in Bakersville, NC, last night. Eight prisoners died in the blaze, and many others are hospitalized. Tonight the news said two were there on parole violation, one for DUI, and similar offenses. It was noted that the old, broken down jail had failed inspection since 1997. One fat cat that was interviewed opines, "Well, you gotta remember, they WERE prisoners". I felt the wind off of the scurry of barristers hustling to Bakersville. Hope the widows, et al, don't settle for the initial chump change offer. Ca-ching, ca-ching..... Asheville Citizen-Times article
