From the ditch, Fatima witnessed a horrific avalanche of violence that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

In the early morning hours of July 12, Sudanese foot soldiers and mounted warriors began grabbing the screaming children and throwing them one by one into a raging fire. While this was happening, one of the male villagers ran from his hiding place to plead for the lives of the children. It was a fatal error. In no mood for mercy, the fighters quickly subdued the man, who was subsequently beheaded and chopped into seven pieces. All six of the children, including an eight-year old girl, a five-year old girl, and a three-year old boy, were burned alive.

This attack occurred about 10 days after the Government of Sudan committed to Secretary of State Colin Powell and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that it would halt the reign of terror of the militia in Darfur and provide security throughout the region. more »

There's a sad, but reasonable explanation why you won't see any African men pictured in Sudan refugee photos. Living in a country filled with pet psychics, animal liposuction and suntan butlers, my small worries sure pale in comparison to hers.

Flashback - Welcome to Camp DNC. Video stills from 'Save Our Civil Liberties' "Is this what democracy looks like?" protest of the so-called "free speech zone." Every time a convention rolls around I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Stew Albert can tell you what it looked like in 1968 at the Chicago Convention, with Jerry and Abbie and all the rest. For those too young to remember, this is a fine account you probably didn't cover in History class. Another participant in '68, Tom Hayden, will speak tonight at the Convention.

Don't expect any drama at the DNC; protesters are saving their fire for New York.

Spelling Fuck You For Peace

Last week, the FBI warned the major television networks about the possible threat of anarchists tossing Molotov cocktails at their media trucks. But the Feds didn’t say anything about those same anti-authoritarians singing, bike-riding, juggling, playing the guitar, eating baked beans, and offering free hugs during the DNC. But there they were milling around the Boston Common on Tuesday afternoon for the Bl(A)ck Tea Society’s REALLY really Democratic Bazaar -- anarchists, socialists, Greens, Nader supporters, and anyone else who felt disenfranchised by capitalism, the two-party system, or just wanted a free bagel -- all gathered together for an open-air market that demonstrated the consensus-based group’s "visions of a better world."

And all afternoon, one police helicopter kept buzzing by like a mammoth mechanized mosquito, often drowning out the sound system.

Finally, in between songs, Rovics summoned a call to action. Those of you who want to lay down on the ground and spell ‘Fuck you’ to the helicopters, head over to the medic tent. So 40 or 50 people leapt up from the grass, walked eagerly over to the medic tent, and arranged themselves from head-to-toe, forming seven letters on the ground.

Just one small Fuck You to the police state that tried to keep demonstrators away from Boston. I'm waiting to see the Fuck You they give them in New York. more »

Reading about Julian Schnabel on the internet I see he's currently working on a new movie which stars Johnny Depp, in the role of editor Jean-Dominique Bauby, who, in 1995 at the age of 43, suffered a stroke that paralyzed his entire body. The film, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, is from his book of the same name, in which he used the only tool available to him--his left eye--with which he blinked out its letters and someone typed the words. What a challenging role this will be from a man who maintained his dignity after suffering such a severe stroke. (He has since passed.) The film is tentatively scheduled for a 2006 release.

**Schnabel also directed the delightful Jeffrey Wright in his portrayal of Basquiat.

Tony Blair has asked Downing Street and Foreign Office officials to draw up plans for possible military intervention in Sudan, where more than a million refugees are at risk from famine and disease.

"If need be we will be able to go to Sudan," General Sir Mike Jackson, the chief of general staff, told BBC News 24's Hardtalk programme. "I suspect we could put a brigade together very quickly indeed."

We're probably working on similar scenerios, but they haven't flown anything up the flagpole yet to see how many people will protest it. Look for "leaks" to eek out soon testing those political waters here in the US. Link

Like Jimi Hendrix coming onstage before The Monkees, Bill Clinton is scheduled to be the first speaker at the Democratic National Convention later this month; now to be introduced by wife, Hillary. Molly Ivins agrees: "Get the 'big dog' on first." She describes him as a great politician with a zipper problem in her new book, Who Let The Dogs In?

I saw "The War Room" this week. It's a behind-the-scenes at command central for Bill Clinton's 1992 election campaign with George Stephanopolous, James Carville, and others. They were all balling (uh, crying) the night Clinton won. It's really a genuinely very moving piece of film. It reminds me of how optimistic I was then in the 90s.

Five years ago, Tanya Gold was admitted to the Priory with a catastrophic alcohol problem...

I realised I was an alcoholic the day I mounted Brian Sewell. It was deepest lunchtime, one Tuesday in 1999, and I was working as a gossip columnist at the London Evening Standard. I was drinking vodka from a Pepsi can and writing about dog fashion shows. Then, out of the fractures of my brain, burst a "rock-bottom". I looked across the office and saw the art critic, sitting at his desk.

I decided to "take" Brian. I lunged, straddled him - and the newsroom gaped. As I was peeled off, a pale Sewell said, "If I was ever unsure I'm a homosexual, I'm not now," and I was dispatched to the Priory Hospital, a Victorian Gothic mansion just north of Richmond Park. With battlements, en-suite bedrooms and a jewellery shop, the loony-bin of tabloid lore looks like the Savoy spliced with Broadmoor. It costs £3,000 a week.

Making FireFox Even Faster

I've heard it said, here and other places, that Opera is the fastest browser available. It is fast - there's no denying that - but there are ways to make FireFox render pages every bit as quickly, with just a few easy "tweaks." I had thought these adjustments were pretty well-known, but it's beginning to seem as though they may not be. So I thought it was worthwhile to bring these "hidden settings" more into the light.

To get started, type "about:config" in your FireFox address bar. The settings you're looking for are:

1.) network.http.pipelining

2.) network.http.pipelining.firstrequest

3.) network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

4.) network.http.proxy.pipelining

5.) nglayout.ititialpaint.delay

Set #1, #2, and #4 to "true". Set #3 to a high number, like 32. Set #5 to 0.

Sure as hell worked for me.
