ARTIST EATS A CORGI

In an extraordinary art event artist and animal rights activist Mark McGowan ate a Corgi dog live on the Radio on Tuesday 29th May 2007, in a protest against the Royals and their treatment of animals. The dog died at a Corgi breeding farm in Southern England and was prepared and cooked for McGowan's consumption on the Bob and Roberta Smith radio programme on 104.4 Resonance FM. McGowan says,

'I know some people will find this offensive and tasteless but i did this to raise awarness about the RSPCA's inability to prosecute Prince Phillip and his friends shooting a fox earlier this year, letting it struggle for life for 5 minutes and then beating it to death with a stick.'

Instant Karma

John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business).

Release Date: June 2, 2007

Jackson Browne singing, "Oh, My Love" should be amazing. [cringe] who in the world says "Fab Four"? [/cringe]

Bush's Fleurs du Mal
By MAUREEN DOWD
Published: May 27, 2007

The president thinks he can save face if he keeps taunting Democrats as the party of surrender - just as Nixon did - and dumps the Frankenstate he's created on his successor.

For me, the saddest spot in Washington is the inverted V of the black granite Vietnam wall, jutting up with the names of young men dying in a war that their leaders already knew could not be won.

So many died because of ego and deceit - because L.B.J. and Robert McNamara wanted to save face or because Henry Kissinger wanted to protect Nixon's re-election chances.

Now the Bush administration finds itself at that same hour of shame. It knows the surge is not working. Iraq is in a civil war, with a gruesome bonus of terrorists mixed in. April was the worst month this year for the American military, with 104 soldiers killed, and there have been about 90 killed thus far in May. The democracy's not jelling, as Iraqi lawmakers get ready to slouch off for a two-month vacation, leaving our kids to be blown up.

The top-flight counterinsurgency team that President Bush sent in after long years of pretending that we'd "turned the corner" doesn't believe there's a military solution.

So many deaths; so little truth.

IRANIANS AND AMERICANS SAY NO TO WAR

Enough Fear

How to dismantle an atomic crisis

Seymour Hersh writes an article in the New Yorker. President George W. Bush makes a statement to the press in Washington. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad issues a letter from Tehran. But there is something missing from this debate: the voices of the people with the most to lose.

This is a campaign to bring the voices of Iranians and Americans into a discussion that is being dominated by extremists on both sides and bringing us closer to the unthinkable: nuclear war. Our leaders continue to rattle their sabers and spread fear, but we're ready to talk, and if they won't take that first step, we will take it for them. We've had enough. Enough posturing. Enough threats. Enough fear.

Sermon on Exposition Boulevard
by Rickie Lee Jones

She blazed outta the gate in the early 70s and throughout the years has maintained the ability to turn out memorable melodies that enhance lyrics so pure that they could stand on their own. This newest cd, Sermon On Exposition Boulevard, is smart and passionate and as good as anything she's ever done.

For over 30 years I've followed the music of Rickie Lee Jones who was such an inspiration to me when I was learning to play the guitar and put songs together. She'd probably say that she's a singer-songwriter with one dimension equally important as the other. She's a songwriter's songwriter and if you really like her music, you'll probably like every song she does. Not just a couple of songs on each album. She's just that good.

Intuitive post: A post that may no longer be as topical but nags at you to set it free anyway.

Acid Logic

When I was younger and did boatloads of cocaine, I also ran 6 - 8 miles a day. And I did lots of weight training and cardio. In fact I was compulsive about exercise back then.

When I did lots of acid (and other psychedelics) we grew our own food and began living and eating organically and chugged it back with vitamins. Especially Vitamin C and B-12.

The rumor was that Vitamin C was potentiating the acid. The acid logic was that the healthier you were, the cleaner and better the lsd experience.

It's just strange that in the presence of psychedelics or cocaine I idiotically felt compelled to balance it with what I believed to be a healthier lifestyle.

Sicko Premieres At Cannes

Sicko Premieres At Cannes

This time, the U.S. government apparently has Michael Moore in its sights. To make "Sicko," he traveled to Cuba with some rescue workers who became ill after cleaning up debris from the terror attacks in New York. In the film, he shows them getting health care in Cuba that he says was unavailable to them in the United States.

The film got a warm welcome at Cannes on Saturday where it played to a packed house. It's main message is that the U.S. health care system is driven by private industry greed. The film asks why 50 million Americans have no health care coverage, and why many who have health insurance still have trouble getting treatment.

"I understand why the Bush administration is coming after me -- I have tried to help the very people they refuse to help..."
-- Michael Moore

"Sicko" presents an emotional portrait of an array of people, including volunteer rescue heroes of the September 11 attack, who are denied needed care -- despite the fact that most are insured. And it points a finger at the source of the crisis, a profit-driven insurance industry whose "biggest accomplishment is buying our U.S. Congress" to prevent real reform.

It also focuses on the suffering caused to the nine million children living in the United States whom Moore says are left without any health cover because of the country's reliance on private insurance. 'We are the last country in the industrialized world to have this system,' the film-maker said after the screening. 'The poorest child in Britain has a longer life expectancy than the average American child.'

I don't know what drives this lovely man to want to fix our unconscionable health care system, but I'm grateful for all the passion and love that he displays.

Kombucha Tea

Kombucha - Soft Drink for the 21st Century?

Popping the cap off a bottle of Kombucha — or "mushroom tea" as it’s known by some — is a complete sensory experience. There’s the snap, crackle, fizz of carbonated bubbles, the mysterious slimy globules that slow-float like a psychedelic lava lamp throwback, and the sharp vinegary tang that hits the nose like a slap.

While fizzy, vinegary and slimy are not exactly the most tantalizing food descriptors, this trendy tea has a peculiar allure that’s winning devotees nationwide. At Google’s California corporate headquarters, the cafeteria slings upwards of 100 cups of homemade brew a day, and GT Kombucha, one of the most popular bottled brands on the market, reaps annual sales in the millions.

To clarify, Kombucha is not a mushroom at all, but a symbiotic colony of yeast and beneficial bacteria that grows in sugar-sweetened black tea.

Long used by bo-hos and hippies, mushroom tea finally reaching the Google cafeteria, but actually "jumped the bong" when it became corporate several years ago. This concept has a lovely synchronization widely appearing in the news.

Four Dead In Ohio

Four Dead In Ohio

Sandra, Bill, Allison and Jeffrey

"RIGHT HERE, GET SET, POINT, FIRE!"
Kent State Audio Tape Released

Thirty seven years ago on May 4, 1970, an anti-war student demonstration at Kent State University, Ohio, left four students dead. I was a senior in high school and the news slapped me across the face. I watched the guardsmen shoot down these college kids for peacefully protesting against the war. Can you imagine how that would play out today with our 24 hour news saturation? It was easy to be pissed off and angry at police and lawmakers when they were sending my friends off to war and now killing those left behind. If you weren't already radically involved with change, Kent State was going to change you.
"Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio."
("Ohio" lyrics by Neil Young)

Kent State: May 1-4,1970
Why the Protest began
Nixon announced a troop offensive into Cambodia on April 30, and said going into Cambodia was necessary to "win the peace". But it was really an escalation of war into another country we had no business being in. (sounds familiar) When the the fires from the artillery began to burn in Cambodia, a raging fire of protest spread across the US, especially on college campuses. There wasn't much protesting in the streets until the students got fired up. Students were the nucleus of protest back then as many demonstrations and marches were born there.

This day is as important to me as any other day in history. There would be no turning back now in our rage against war. Remember Kent State.
