Alan Moore Interview

Stripping Down the Comic With Alan Moore

Most writers are boring, and the less they're allowed to talk about what they do behind closed doors, the better. But some writers are verbal rock stars, able to tear off entrancing philosophical riffs or to lay down a hypnotic anecdotal solo upon request. One of the few modern writers who can entertain a general audience is Alan Moore, Britain's bard of the industrial wastelands of Northampton, and the man whom people call the world's greatest living comic-book writer. (Mr. Moore has made it clear in the past that he writes comic books, describing the term "graphic novel" as "something some idiot in a marketing department came up with.")

Gareth Pugh | Spring 2009 | Paris

Brit-kid designer Gareth Pugh had a lot to prove in Paris last night.

"Fetish-lite" for Spring/Summer 2009 from Gareth Pugh is what I'd call it with the usual patent, latex and pvc. His collection was entirely in black and white, inspired by Hamlet, Millais' Ophelia and Elizabeth I.

See his whole collection from fashion week in Paris here.

Pugh, 27, one of the stars of London Fashion Week for the past three years, has built a cult following for his bizarre, cartoon-costume creations involving cyber-gothic ensembles in leather, metal and PVC, accessorized with masks, 'topiary' headgear and fetishistic footwear. Read More »

Pass a New Deal for Main Street

They said it couldn't be done, but it HAS been done. At 2:05 pm today, the House voted down the taxpayer bailout of Wall Street. The stock market predictably dropped on the news that investment companies won't be getting our money, and the pundits will be getting all exercised about it. Here's what you should do about that:

Take a deep breath.

And then send a message to Congress to start focusing on the real fixes we need.

Wall Street has actually convinced a lot of us that what's good for the Dow Jones Average is good for us real people. But for eight years while bankers raked in billions, ordinary Americans have seen their real wages drop, jobs sent overseas, health insurance rates skyrocket, and now thousands are losing their homes.

We need our government to actively work for US in fixing this mess, so let's tell Congress it's time to start over and pass a New Deal for Main Street.

You'll Never Be Vice President: A Letter to My Daughter, the Community Organizer

You'll Never Be Vice President: A Letter to My Daughter, the Community Organizer

Why didn't I nip all this in the bud and buy you a well-oiled Remington 12-gauge?
By Marc Cooper
Published on September 11, 2008

Daughter Dearest,

It is with great pain and a certain measure of shame that I write you this note. Having grown up in the ’60s and watched, sometimes at glaringly close range, the emergence of the women’s liberation movement, I had always harbored great dreams and aspirations for you.

But as I listened to Governor Sarah Palin address the nation the other night, I had to confess that — as your father — I have clearly failed. Honey, you will never be able to achieve the greatness of being nominated for vice president of the United States. Forget about it.

And for this sad reality, I accept all blame. ’Twas I who steered you wrong.

Here you are, almost 25, with what your mother and I believed was a solid education behind you, and yet you are nothing but a common community organizer. Yes, the labor union you work for represents nearly 2 million service workers — about three times the population of Alaska. But, alas, as Governor Palin pointed out, you have no real responsibilities. By helping janitors, security guards, nursing aides and orderlies gain a living wage, paid health care insurance and a retirement fund, you have only robbed them of the personal initiative to go out there and make something better of themselves. You have rendered them feebly dependent on Big Labor and tax-and-spend Big Government — and all in their own crass self-interest in survival.

I’m not sure when I helped nudge you on to such a mistaken road. Probably sometime while you were attending that government-run high school in which we enrolled you. You could have joined the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as Ms. Palin did. Instead, I pushed you to become a columnist on the school paper. You could have spent your afternoons becoming the local barracuda on the courts. But, nope, your mom and I indulged your trivial passions for staging and directing the plays of Shakespeare. You could have competed to be Miss Woodland Hills or even Miss Congenial California, but — no — there were your mom and dad encouraging you to finish writing your first play. Sorry.

Free Your Mind And Win A Pony
by Golden Animals

Not just another girl drummer, boy singer/guitar player duo, Golden Animals have a really good low-tech vibe with good, smooth guitar licks and strong vocals.

Doors comparisons have been made to singer Tommy Eisner and it's sure evident on "The Steady Roller". Some of the guitar sound reminds me of early Eric Burdon and the Animals and very early Beatles ("Do The Roar").

Looking for a quote, I found more Golden Animals info at I Guess I'm Floating.

Good stuff.

Southeast Gas Shortage

photo credit: Jason at sweetashvegas who is always my first media stop when looking for anything about Asheville.

Oh, man, when you'ved added the local gas station to your speed dial, you know that times are getting hard. Two freaking weeks after Ike and we're still hunting for gas? My husband offered someone $10 a gallon for gas.

But it paid off. I called my neighborhood station this morning and she said, "hurry up and get down here" and I did. Good timing.

It's one thing to fill up and let it last you for a week or so if you're fortunate to live close to your usual stops. But it's another thing to fill up and have to drive long distances every day, like from state to state. grrrr

We all have it hard right now if we drive. I just had to sound off a bit.

**UPDATE: Knoxville, TN, has mixed emotions about Pilot sending gas to Asheville and more. {via}

This is Your Nation on White Privilege

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Tim Wise's latest opinion piece:

This is Your Nation on White Privilege
By Tim Wise
9/13/08

For those who still can’t grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.

* White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because “every family has challenges,” even as black and Latino families with similar “challenges” are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.

* White privilege is when you can call yourself a “fuckin’ redneck,” like Bristol Palin’s boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll “kick their fuckin' ass,” and talk about how you like to “shoot shit” for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.

* White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.

* White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don’t all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you’re “untested.”

* White privilege is being able to say that you support the words “under God” in the pledge of allegiance because “if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it’s good enough for me,” and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the “under God” part wasn’t added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.

* White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you. White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was “Alaska first,” and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she’s being disrespectful.

* White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think you’re being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college--you’re somehow being mean, or even sexist.

* White privilege is being able to convince white women who don’t even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a “second look.”

* White privilege is being able to fire people who didn’t support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.

* White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God’s punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you’re just a good church-going Christian, but if you’re black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you’re an extremist who probably hates America.

* White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a “trick question,” while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O’Reilly means you’re dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.

* White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a “light” burden.

* And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren’t sure about that whole “change” thing. Ya know, it’s just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.

Tim Wise is the author of White Like Me (Soft Skull, 2005, revised 2008), and of Speaking Treason Fluently, publishing this month, also by Soft Skull.

Noda had experienced ongoing complications related to a bad car accident last year that resulted in chronic pain. The exact cause of death was not specified.

Beyond being a brilliant artist and wonderful talent, Nagi was one of the most incredibly unique spirits that I have known," says Sheila Stepanek, CEO/EP Partizan US, which represented Noda. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends." Stepanek says that Noda passed "in her Mark Ryden dress, Chanel boots, perfect make-up with Viktor & Rolf lace black eye lashes."

52 Meditations On Life

1. There are people in this world that would die for me.
2. There are people in this world I would die for.

4. People are not mind readers. I must never hesitate to tell someone how I feel.

8. There is nobody else exactly like me, with my exact abilities, talents, and ideas.
9. I can help myself by helping those around me first.

11. I will accept compliments and criticism openly and make educated decisions based on a weighted sum of the two.
12. Information is infinite. There are ideas, products and cultures I do not yet understand. I will always keep an open mind to new formulas.
13. I am in competition with one person, and one person only… myself. I am competing to be the best I can be.
14. True wisdom is the byproduct of life experience. I will seek as many real world experiences as possible.

23. I will celebrate my successes. I deserve it.
24. Money will only make my life easier if it is mine free and clear.
25. If I wake up several mornings in a row and hate what I am about to do with my day, I will make a change. Life is too short.

28. If I want to remember it, I will write it down in a trusted location.
29. I will never spend more than I have.
30. I will thank the people who have helped me, and I will return the favor as soon as I am able.
31. I will never complain about a problem. I will supply a solution instead.

35. I will never succumb to greed. Enough is enough.
36. Time is precious. I will manage my time effectively.
37. Right now is the only guaranteed moment in my life. I will make the best of it.
38. I will stand firm by my values without senselessly promoting them.
39. I will never over-promise. I will over-deliver on everything I commit to.
40. I will always assess the situation and provide value where needed.
41. I cannot make someone love me. I can only be someone who can be loved.
42. I will always strive to be the best I can be, but I will never try to be someone I'm not.
43. I will always articulate my words so people understand me.
44. I will slow down and become conscious of life's simple pleasures.

47. If I never try, I will never know.
48. I will face my fears. I will not cower.
49. My habits define my life.
50. I will always take ownership of my actions, or my actions will own me.

Hopeful Palin Interview Q's

... if you’re reading this, Charlie, we want to know everything, including:

What kind of budget-cutter makes a show of getting rid of the state plane, then turns around and bills taxpayers for the travel of her husband and kids between Juneau and Wasilla and sticks the state with a per-diem tab to stay in her own home?

Why was Sarah for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against the Bridge to Nowhere, and why was she for earmarks before she was against them? And doesn’t all this make her just as big a flip-flopper as John Kerry?

What kind of fiscal conservative raises taxes and increases budgets in both her jobs — as mayor and as governor?

When the phone rings at 3 a.m., will she call the Wasilla Assembly of God congregation and ask them to pray on a response, as she asked them to pray for a natural gas pipeline?

Does she really think Adam, Eve, Satan and the dinosaurs mingled on the earth 5,000 years ago?

Why put out a press release about her teenage daughter’s pregnancy and then spend the next few days attacking the press for covering that press release?

Patricia Morrison's Old Man and the Flea

Sunday, September 7, 2008

The following is from Patricia Morrison's Old Man and the Flea, which is delightful and spot on reading for your Sunday morning shot of truth.

The Old Man and The Flea

Ah yes, the experienced John McCain. Sooooo much more experienced than Obama/Biden. How, pray, is he more experienced? Well, let us just count the goddamn ways…

He’s more experienced in voting against raising the minimum wage. More experienced in denying decent benefits for our heroic military veterans whom he has more experience in sending over there to uselessly die and be needlessly maimed in the first place. More experienced in voting against the G.I. Bill (the one he lyingly claims he really supported). More experienced in voting against any kind of bill that would benefit the reeling middle classes. More experienced in voting for any kind of bill that sends more money to his dark masters—big oil, big business and big government.

He's also more experienced in supporting the Iraq war. Gotta take out those weapons of mass... oops, sorry, never mind. He's more experienced in handing multinational corporations big fat tax breaks while the middle class struggles desperately to keep a roof over its head and food on the table and a job in its future. He’s more experienced in hiring greedy corporate lobbyists to run his campaign. He's more experienced in having advisors who call us a "nation of whiners" and more experienced in savagely dissing anyone who doesn’t agree with the reactionary Repug policies.

He’s more experienced in demeaning women. He dumped his first wife, Carol, after a horrific car crash in which she was badly disfigured, crippled and put on weight as a result; he called his rodeo-beauty-queen second wife, Cindy, a cunt in public, and only the other day he suggested that she should compete in a topless beauty contest.

He’s more experienced in being a pig. Ross Perot, who paid Carol McCain’s huge medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both she and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics. “McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,” Perot says. “After he came home [from North Vietnam] Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.” [Read More »]

John McCain as he introduces Palin:
"The person I'm about to introduce to you ... And, I am especially proud to say in the week we celebrate the anniversary of women's suffrage, a devoted wife and a mother of five..." via

John, you ignorant doofus. Women's suffrage and devoted wife and mother certainly aren't synonymous with one another. On that long road to suffrage, many good women marched and suffered in jail to get the right to vote, not for the right to lift someone else up. Women's Suffrage was about the Women's Right to Vote, damnit.

And on that long road, when one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

She wasn't enduring this in hopes of becoming a devoted wife and mother. McCain was off on this and he's off on thinking he'll garner the women's vote simply because he chose a woman to run with him. Woman all over should be insulted. link
