Howl Festival

is five days of dance, music, performance, poetry & writing @ Tompkins Square Park, Sept 5 - 11.

I was happy to see that the Cockettes are performing there Sept 6th. An outrageous gender bending legendary hippie performance troupe from San Francisco around 1969-1972. A recent Cockettes DVD has introduced them to a new generation. link

BABY WIT - You May Not Be Cool, But Your Baby Can Be

Lovely Tattoo Shift Dress at Baby Wit for your small child or grandchild but I just can't justify buying one for my grandson, Phoenix (who's a year old September 9). Nice, affordable stuff for kiddies.

Whole Lotta Cash?

Whole Lotta Cash?

Jimmy Page & Leona Lewis, winner of British reality show 'The X Factor', will perform an altered version of the Led Zeppelin classic 'Whole Lotta Love' for the closing ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympics on Sunday Aug 24th.

Jimmy and Leona's new 2008 version - without any of the apparantly offensive 'sexual innuendoes', will be performed atop a 'transformed' red double-decker bus (# 2012) during the 8 minute handover ceremony. When the 4 minute Page | Lewis 'duet' ends, British footballer (soccer player) David Beckham will kick a football (known as a soccer ball in North America) into a crowd of athletes before the feed cuts away to a London 2012 handover party taking place live outside Buckingham Palace in England.

You lost me at Leona Lewis.

THE CHILDREN OF AGAPE CHOIR

Thursday, August 21, 2008

WE ARE TOGETHER: THE CHILDREN OF AGAPE CHOIR celebrates the remarkable life-changing odyssey of orphaned, South African children who overcome hardship through love, community and music.

I watched this doc last night, well, around 3am or so, and I cried and I cried and I cried. (Did I mention that I cried?)

Their story moved me immensely. You might think that you wouldn't have a single thing in common with this family but as the story peels away, and it sounds so simple to say, but people really are the same all over the world.

I enjoy it when the stats roll away and the story can tell itself.

Open Letter to Caroline Kennedy

"Caroline: Pull a Cheney!"

An Open Letter to Caroline Kennedy (head of the Obama VP search team) from Michael Moore

What Obama needs is a vice presidential candidate who is NOT a professional politician, but someone who is well-known and beloved by people across the political spectrum; someone who, like Obama, spoke out against the war; someone who has a good and generous heart, who will be cheered by the rest of the world; someone whom we've known and loved and admired all our lives and who has dedicated her life to public service and to the greater good for all.

That person, Caroline, is you.

WHAT??? Well, maybe.... [READ MORE]

Tilda Swinton's Nairn Festival

Tilda Swinton's Nairn Festival

WITH no red carpet, paparazzi or glitzy after-show party, and not even a cinema, Scotland's latest film festival is by no means conventional.

The first Nairn film festival, founded by Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton, (LOVE her) launched Friday, showing an offbeat mix of classic, unusual and obscure films – in a former ballroom.

Entry is £3 – or free if you bring a tray of home-baked cakes – and the audience will sit on beanbags. Running from Aug 15 - Aug 23.

Still On Track

I'm still amping up to my big Quit Smoking Day on August 9 and have cut down 90% on smoking already. I've been feeling foggy headed but that's pretty much all that's bothering me besides slaying these dragon urges. And I'm really beginning to get irritable.

I Quit

I Quit

Largely because of a doctor visit this week, I decided to seriously quit smoking (again) and today is my first day on the prescription medication, Chantix, or Chamtix, as it's called in Canada and Europe.

The perfect scenario for this 12 week program is to quit smoking by the end of the first week. Most people slow down through the weeks and end up quitting altogether by the end of the 12 weeks or sooner.

I've quit twice before by cutting down. After 40 years of smoking, it's not only about the nicotine, though that withdrawal will be ugly. It's also the lifestyle, the bitch of a habit, the oral fixation -- tootsie roll pops and gum are helpful. I've kicked smoking (and worse) before so I hope this time I'm successful. And that it's not too late for me.

A diagx managed to scare this old bird into big-time serious quitting mode. Chantix is controversial, but the risks outweigh keeping smoking to me.

What has worked for you, or someone you know, to quit smoking? How'd you do it?
